Banner University Medical Center South Campus in Tucson, AZ is an academic medical center focused on exceptional patient care, teaching, and research. The Observation Unit is a 9‑bed, fast‑paced environment handling a mix of medical comorbidities and short‑stay patients. RNs will participate in the PCU Academy and contribute to a close‑knit interdisciplinary team.

POSITION SUMMARY

This RN role assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and standards of professional nursing practice, utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. The RN is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others under their direction, using specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to assess data and plan and provide appropriate care.

FUNCTIONS
  • Assess patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs; review history, diagnostics, and laboratory data; report abnormal results to physicians and other caregivers; complete assessments and reassessments as outlined in policy.
  • Formulate a plan of care, including the discharge plan, based on assessment data and input from patient, family, and health team; set realistic, measurable goals; consider patient characteristics; collaborate with multidisciplinary team and revise the plan as patient needs change.
  • Implement the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of health care team activities; provide care per physician orders and nursing plan, complying with policies, standards and regulatory requirements; delegate appropriately and supervise nursing and other personnel; communicate patient status accurately to other caregivers.
  • Evaluate patient and family responses to care and teaching; revise the plan of care as needed; assess progress toward goals and expected outcomes in collaboration with the health care team.
  • Document assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record; ensure legible, timely documentation reflecting objective and subjective data, nursing interventions and patient response; note physician orders accurately and timely.
  • Provide care based on best evidence, participate in research activities, shared leadership; interact in education, role development, orientation of personnel, patients, families, and visitors; mentor and precept when appropriate.
  • Contribute to society through activities that lead to excellent patient outcomes, participating in national nursing quality indicators and outcomes; engage in professional organizations.
  • In some roles, supervise staff and workflow of the department.
  • Interact with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts; provide spiritual support when indicated; synthesize and prioritize data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Current, valid RN license in the state of practice (or temporary/interim or compact RN license); BLS certification required. Minimum one year experience in an acute care hospital setting within the past 12 months, as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area. Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's degree preferred; professional certification preferred. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
