Position Summary

This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing practice standards. The nurse is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by themselves or others under their direction and utilizes specialized knowledge and judgment to assess data and plan care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.

Functions
  • Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs; reviews history and physical; reviews diagnostics and laboratory data; reports abnormal results; completes assessments and reassessments per policy.
  • Formulates a plan of care, including discharge planning, using assessment data and input from patient, family, and health team; initiates plan of care based on patient-specific needs; reviews and revises plan as patient status changes.
  • Implements the plan through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the healthcare team; follows physician orders and nursing plan; delegates appropriately; provides supervision to licensed nurses and other personnel; ensures continuity of care through accurate communication.
  • Evaluates patient and family response to care and teaching; revises plan accordingly; assesses progress toward goals and expected outcomes with team members.
  • Documents assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record; ensures documentation is legible, timely, and in line with policy; accurately notes physician orders.
  • Provides evidence‑based care; may participate in research activities; engages in unit or facility shared leadership; mentors and supports the development of new staff.
  • Contributes to society through activities that achieve excellent patient outcomes—timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care; participates in quality improvement and professional organizations.
  • May supervise staff and manage workflow of the department, depending on role.
  • Interacts with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts; coordinates with clergy for spiritual support; synthesizes data from multiple sources to support patient and family response to health changes.
  • Physical Demands

    Typical direct patient care environment requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently; respond promptly with adequate agility and reaction time; maintain adequate hearing and visual acuity; execute fine motor skills and eye‑hand coordination; use proper body mechanics to assist ambulation and transfers; lift up to 75 pounds; apply standard precautions; communicate effectively in person, by telephone, or in writing;

    and use a personal computer periodically.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Current valid RN license in the state of practice, or a temporary/interim RN license, or a compact RN license for the state of practice.
    • BLS certification required; additional certifications or continuing education may be required based on area of practice.
    • Desirable clinical experience in the specific area of application; minimal experience of one year in an acute‑care hospital setting; recent practice within past 12 months as a Registered Nurse in the specialty area.
    • Additional requirements may include valid driver’s license, vehicle, or required fingerprint clearance card depending on clinical setting.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Professional certification preferred.
    • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
