American Analytical (American Analytical Testing Laboratory Services / Black Labs, LLC) is a Tucson-based, ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited (ANAB AT-3321) and CDC ELITE environmental testing laboratory, and a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). We serve healthcare facilities, government and tribal health systems, and manufacturers - with deep focus on Legionella and water-compliance microbiology, AAMI ST108 critical water for sterile processing and dialysis, and a growing cosmetics microbiology program.
Therole
We're hiring a part-time Microbiologist to support our growing microbiology bench - performing accredited environmental and cosmetic microbiology testing, upholding ISO/IEC 17025 quality standards, and providing capacity for peak workloads and scheduled bench coverage. This is a hands‑on, on‑site role, ideal for a detail-oriented microbiologist who wants flexible part‑time hours in a small, mission‑driven accredited lab.
What you’ll do- Perform Legionella culture testing per ISO 11731:2017 / CDC ELITE procedures - sample processing, plating, serial incubation reads through day 10, confirmation, and reporting.
- Run heterotrophic plate count (SM 9215), total coliform &
E. coli (SM 9223B), and related potable / non-potable water microbiology. - Support AAMI ST108 critical water and endotoxin (LAL) testing for sterile processing and dialysis water.
- Contribute to the cosmetics microbiology program - microbial limits / USP // and Aerobic Plate Count (AOAC OMA 2015.13) on personal‑care products - and environmental swab / clean‑room monitoring.
- Prepare and QC culture media, reagents, and controls; maintain rigorous aseptic technique.
- Keep strict chain‑of‑custody and complete ISO/IEC 17025 documentation - bench sheets, QC records, traceability, and result entry in the LIMS.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain microbiology equipment (incubators, biosafety cabinet, autoclave, microscope); log maintenance.
- Follow lab safety, biohazard, and waste‑handling protocols.
- Support method verification and proficiency testing (e.g., CDC ELITE panels) as needed.
- Promptly flag nonconformances or out‑of‑specification results to the Laboratory Director.

- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field (or equivalent hands‑on experience).
- 2+ year of laboratory microbiology experience (academic, clinical, environmental, food, pharma, or cosmetics).
- Strong aseptic technique; proficiency in plating, culturing, and microbial enumeration/identification.
- Meticulous documentation habits and comfort with detailed recordkeeping.
- Reliable and able to commit to a consistent part‑time schedule, including fixed culture‑read days.
- Able to work on‑site in Tucson; authorized to work in the U.S.
- Experience in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory.
- Legionella / CDC ELITE experience (ISO 11731 or CDC procedure).
- Water‑compliance, AAMI ST108, or USP cosmetic microbial‑limits experience.
- QMS, LIMS experience; ASCP / NRCM or similar certification.
- Stand for extended periods and perform fine‑motor bench work; lift up to ~25 lbs.
- Comfortable handling environmental and biological samples under biosafety protocols.
- Flexible part‑time hours in a small, collaborative, veteran‑owned accredited lab.
- Hands‑on work across a rare credential stack (ISO 17025 + CDC ELITE) and multiple disciplines - water, healthcare, and cosmetics.
- Direct mentorship from the Laboratory Director and real ownership of your bench.
