Overview
The Cultural Institutions Compliance Professional IV is a 1.0 FTE position within the Collections Division of the Arizona State Museum (ASM), University of Arizona (U of
A). The role reports to the Archaeological Records Office (ARO) Manager and partners with the ARO Manager to complete tasks and supervise staff assigned to the ASM Archaeological Records Office. The incumbent administers and implements the Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA; A.R.S. 41-841 et seq.) and ensures compliance with related policies and procedures outlined by state and federal laws and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) rules.
Key duties include supervising ARO staff, overseeing receipt, review, processing and in-perpetuity curation of archaeological Non-Collection Survey collections and other ARO submissions, and coordinating with the Head of Collections Division, Mandated Programs Managers, and the Office of Research and Partnerships Business Center (ORPBC) to manage ASM’s Mandated Programs’ financial and time-tracking systems.
ASM serves the State of Arizona as its official archaeological repository and permitting authority for archaeological activity on state land. The collection includes 40,000 cubic feet of archaeological research materials and millions of objects from Indigenous peoples of the region, including the world s largest and most comprehensive collections of Native North American basketry and Southwest Indigenous pottery. ARO Policies, Procedures, and Standards:
- Oversee and conduct review and in-perpetuity curation of Non-collection survey projects submitted to the ARO, including project tracking.
- Oversee archaeological site monitoring, testing, and excavation project submission materials submitted to the Permits Office, including project tracking.
- Oversee Project Registration Forms, Site Cards, and Site Card Updates for projects submitted to the Repository.
- Oversee and potentially conduct/collaborate on archaeological records research for archaeologists and cultural resources summary letters for non-archaeologists.
- Oversee and fulfill requests for electronic archaeological reports, ASM Site Cards, and ASM Project Registration Forms.
- Oversee and conduct concurrent review of all non-collection survey report drafts submitted to ASM and identify and recommend needed changes to the report.
- Oversee and engage with ARO in-office and virtual visitor services, including access to and use of USGS 7.5-minute paper maps and records access.
- Coordinate with the ARO and AZSITE Managers to maintain an efficient data transfer system from the ARO.
- May take a lead role in critical ARO process.
Mandated Programs Implementation
- Facilitate the institutional administration of state and federal compliance programs to ensure full adherence to laws governing antiquities.
- Receive and check requests submitted by clients through the ASM Request Quote for Services portal.
- Issue estimates and quotes to be used when invoicing clients for services provided by Mandated Programs.
- As a member of the Mandated Programs team, work with the ASM Head of Collections, ASM Associate Director, and the managers of other Mandated Programs Offices to develop external and internal policies, procedures, and memos related to ASM s state-mandated responsibilities and services.
- Partner with managers of other Mandated Programs offices to ensure ASM Mandated Programs meet all client and ASM needs.
- Partner with the ARO Manager to build and maintain professional relationships with ARO stakeholders, including federal and state agencies and the archaeology community.
- Manage ASM’s State Mandated Programs financial and time tracking systems, in collaboration with other program managers and ORPBC.
- Collaborate on efficient review, processing, and collections transfer.
- Collaborate on comprehensive organizational policies and implementation guidelines that translate legal mandates into actionable institutional standards.
