The Center for Applied Transportation Sciences (CATS) in the College of Engineering is seeking motivated applicants to fill a Researcher/Scientist III (Research Scientist) position.
CATS is a college-level research center established at the University of Arizona (UArizona) and founded in 2021. CATS' mission is to serve as a research, training, and capacity‑building resource for regional governments, educational institutions, and private sectors in the field of Smart Communities. The research areas include but are not limited to Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO), transportation system performance management, and Mobility on Demand (MOD).
The successful applicant will work with multiple research areas, including but not limited to, intelligent transportation systems, transportation planning, smart mobility, big data analytics, large‑scale transportation system simulation and analysis, transportation safety analysis, and/or traffic operations. This applicant will also work on writing grant proposals and coordinating administrative processes, and potentially support Arizona Transportation Institute (AZTI) of conducting research and project management.
We are seeking a well‑rounded individual with experience in the aforesaid research areas. This individual should be detailed‑oriented, conscientious, and have the ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.

Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct advanced research, perform experiments, and analyze data in multiple research areas.
- Manage sponsored research projects by serving as a Principal Investigator (PI), Co‑PI, or Project Manager (PM), on research projects.
- Participate in grant writing, including generating preliminary data, submitting grant applications, and preparing progress reports.
- Require to travel to pitch research ideas to local research sponsors (AZ driver's license is required)
- Present research at local, national and international conferences.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate research assistants and low‑level staff.
- Contribute to classroom and workshop teaching.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of transportation engineering topics, such as traffic operations, transportation planning, pavement, safety, etc.
- Advanced database and computer programming skills, including database management and coding in Python, R, etc.
- Prior experience of grant writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills in working with both technical and non‑technical personnel at different levels in the organization.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Familiarity in working with local transportation agencies in Arizona (or elsewhere).

Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
