Research Assistant, Steward Observatory
The University of Arizona's Steward Observatory invites you to apply to the role of Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will work with Kevin Wagner's research group to conduct research on planetary systems, including processing JWST and/or LBTI data on young and/or nearby systems. Specific tasks will include PSF modeling and subtraction, reference differential imaging, and extraction of astrophysical quantities through forward modeling.
Tasks may also include theoretical modeling in comparison to observations. Experience with high contrast imaging, specifically of systems with imaged disks and planets, is desired.
Steward Observatory is both a century-old observatory on the University of Arizona campus and one of the University's oldest research units. Founded in 1918, the Observatory brings together students, staff, faculty, engineers, and technicians to explore the universe and share discoveries through world-class research, education, and outreach. With more than 180 professionals supporting advanced facilities, laboratories, and observatories, Steward Observatory offers a collaborative environment where technical expertise plays a critical role in advancing ground- and space-based astronomy.
Outstanding U of A benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; U of A/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; retirement plans; access to U of A recreation and cultural activities; and more! The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs.
Under supervision and detailed instructions, utilize software and theoretical tools to facilitate research activities, including data cleaning and coding, algorithm testing and optimization, and statistical analysis. Following outlined procedures, help with research data preparation, analysis, and evaluation; assist in processes for developing forward modeling; contribute to the evaluation of data analysis methods and results; maintain data records; participate in research group meetings regularly and present preliminary results of analysis.
Assist with the preparation of data and plots for the submission of scientific publications, such as manuscripts and conference proceedings, in collaboration with other researchers of the research group.
High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required. Bachelor's degree in related field. Demonstrated experience with high-contrast imaging techniques, particularly in the direct imaging of protoplanetary disks and planetary companions around stellar systems. Direct research experience in observational astronomy and/or theoretical astrophysics, including hands-on involvement in the reduction and analysis of data from ground- or space-based observatories. Experience with scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, IDL) and familiarity with common astronomical data formats, reduction tools, and software frameworks is strongly preferred.
