Position Highlights The Department of Surgery is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician II to support translational research focused on wound healing, fibrosis, regenerative medicine, and advanced therapeutics within the Gurtner Lab. This position independently performs a wide range of laboratory techniques, assists with preclinical animal studies, maintains laboratory operations, and supports data collection and analysis across multiple federally funded research projects.

The Research Technician II will work closely with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, and collaborators while contributing to high-quality research, regulatory compliance, and laboratory organization.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, perform molecular biology, cell culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, microscopy, flow cytometry sample preparation, protein and nucleic acid isolation, and other laboratory techniques.
  • Assist with experimental optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with preparation of figures and documentation for publications and grant applications.
  • Perform animal procedures under approved IACUC protocols including murine wound healing models, injections, tissue harvesting, monitoring, and sample collection.
  • Maintain breeding colonies and assist with colony management.
  • Perform animal health observations and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist the Principal Investigator and other lab members to create data/figures for grant proposals.
  • Contribute preliminary data and analysis to ongoing funded projects progress reports.
  • Adhere to institutional policies, biosafety (BSL-2), and regulatory requirements (IACUC, IRB).
  • Maintain accurate documentation of experiments and data in compliance with lab and sponsor standards.
  • Contribute to lab organization, protocol development, and shared resource management.
  • Organize and maintain experimental datasets.
  • Perform routine and basic analyses using Graph Pad Prism, Excel, or similar software.
  • Assist investigators with data interpretation and preparation of research reports.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of molecular biology, cell culture, histology, microscopy, and immunostaining techniques.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology, cell culture, and/or omics technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance (IACUC, IRB, biosafety).
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant laboratory research experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience performing molecular biology and cell culture techniques.
  • Experience maintaining detailed experimental records.
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment following biosafety procedures.
  • Experience with animal research procedures preferred.
