Description
NOIRLab is seeking a highly motivated Science Intern to contribute to cutting‑edge research focused on planetary systems around white dwarfs. The intern will work alongside NOIRLab scientists to analyze and interpret data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and advance our understanding of the composition and evolution of planetary systems beyond the main sequence.
Essential Functions- Collaborate with NOIRLab researchers to reduce and analyze HST Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of white dwarf stars.
- Process, calibrate, and extract scientific measurements from HST datasets using established astronomical software and data reduction pipelines.
- Run and evaluate white dwarf atmospheric models to determine stellar parameters and atmospheric compositions.
- Assist with data interpretation and scientific analysis related to planetary systems around white dwarfs.
- Prepare figures, visualizations, documentation, and research results for scientific presentations, reports, and publications.
- Maintain accurate records of research activities and analysis workflows.
- Ensure proper stewardship of AURA property and promptly report missing, damaged, or non-functioning equipment to the appropriate supervisor or Property Officer.
- Support compliance with applicable government award terms, conditions, and institutional policies.
- Currently enrolled in a master’s program, or recently completed a bachelor’s degree (or higher), in astronomy, physics, computer science, data science, or a related technical discipline.
- Foundational knowledge of astronomy and astrophysics, including stars, planets, and white dwarfs.
- Strong programming and scripting skills, preferably in Python and/or Bash, with experience automating workflows, analyzing data, and generating scientific visualizations.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative research team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Prior research experience in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related scientific field.
- Experience with stellar atmosphere modeling or white dwarf science.
- Proficiency with Python-based scientific computing tools such as Astropy, Num Py, Pandas, and Matplotlib.
- Experience working with astronomical datasets and/or observations from space-based observatories such as HST, JWST, Spitzer, or WISE.
- Familiarity with spectroscopic data reduction and analysis techniques.
- Experience working in Linux or Unix computing environments.
- Hands‑on experience with world‑class space telescope data.
- Mentorship from leading scientists in astronomy and astrophysics.
- Exposure to advanced data analysis, atmospheric modeling, and scientific computing techniques.
- Opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.
- Experience working within a collaborative, mission‑driven research environment.
Salary Range: $17.79 per hour. The final salary will depend on skills, qualifications, and experience. AURA offers an excellent benefits package including paid time off and retirement plan contributions.
