Position Overview
University of Arizona, Department of Materials Science and Engineering & Department of Biomedical Engineering, BIO5 Institute.
Professor Kim Min‑kyu’s laboratory focuses on the design of proteins and biopolymers, polymer physics, molecular self‑assembly, flexible materials and biomaterials to develop functional bio‑materials for medical, environmental and defense applications.
In partnership with the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIH) via the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA), this postdoctoral position will focus on the design and development of red‑blood‑cell mimetic drug delivery systems.
Location:
Tucson, Arizona – a mid‑size U.S. city with a low cost of living and strong aerospace, optics, photonics and biotech/medical industries.
Contract:
1 year, renewable based on research outcomes and funding.
Start date:
January 2027 (negotiable).
- Production, purification, and characterization of recombinant proteins.
- Design, fabrication, and analysis of cytoskeletal protein networks and red‑cell mimetic micro‑particles.
- Investigate mechanistic properties and stress‑responsive drug retention and release behavior of red‑cell mimetic drug delivery systems.
- Present research findings at conferences and prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Supervise graduate and undergraduate research associates.
- Conduct collaborative research in related fields.
Integrate structural, mechanical, and biological characteristics of red blood cells to design delivery vehicles that resist in‑body clearance, retain drugs in normal physiology, and release drugs in response to disease‑associated mechanical stress.
Qualifications- Ph.D. in protein engineering, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, or related field, or expected to obtain the degree before the start of employment.
- Demonstrated experience in recombinant protein production, purification, and characterization.
- Ability to conduct independent experiments and analyze problem‑solving during the research process.
- Strong record of communicating results through publications and academic presentations and ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Experience with polymer or protein‑based materials and self‑assembly.
- Background in flexible materials, biomaterials, and drug delivery.
- Experience in micro‑particle fabrication, microfluidics, and physical/chemical characterization.
