Position: Research Technician I (Extended Temporary)

Position Highlights

The Research Technician I conducts and supports microbial ecology and plant biology laboratory research by developing protocols to address challenging research questions, designing and performing experiments, summarizing and interpreting experiment data, and submitting research reports in a laboratory setting.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Follow detailed protocols for biochemical enzyme assays and use a plate reader.
  • Extract DNA from soils, isolates, and plant tissues, and analyze metagenomic DNA.
  • Work with and support undergraduate researchers and organize laboratory space.
  • Record keeping, make observations, analyze data, and interpret experimental results.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative results.
  • Clean and sterilize labware used for research.
  • Maintain and grow bacterial cultures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of environmental microbial sampling.
  • Knowledge of genomic sequencing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of plant growth.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Skilled in working in a laboratory, with a focus on soil microbial ecology within plant-soil systems.
  • Basic computer and laboratory skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, R, PCR, culturing, and soil extraction techniques.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
