The Primavera Foundation is co-creating pathways out of poverty through outreach, housing, workforce development, comprehensive community development, and home ownership and financial education.

The Senior Kitchen Team Member (SKTM) is responsible for managing Men’s Shelter kitchen operations, including preparing and serving meals, working closely with community meal teams, ensuring that all food handling/storage regulations meet compliance standards, managing food and supply inventories, and training staff and volunteers who cover various meal shifts. The successful candidate will be adept at working both independently and as part of a team (and able to shift between the two with ease), provide direction to kitchen staff and volunteers, be able to work with diverse groups of people, demonstrate kindness and cultural sensitivity, be process‑oriented, fast‑paced, and extremely detail‑oriented and thorough.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by leadership):

  • Schedule and hold regular 1:1 meetings with assigned program staff and conduct a monthly collaborative staff meeting in collaboration with the Program Manager
  • Communicate with other shelter staff, the program manager, and other leads, and provide updates during lead meetings
  • Communicate any participant concerns to the program manager and other shelter staff, and ensure documentation as applicable
  • Assist with recruitment, training, and supervision of participant volunteers and other employees for kitchen chores
  • Assume the lead role for managing activities involving the kitchen and preparing meals
  • Regularly monitor and oversee the kitchen cleaning tasks completely daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually
  • Ensure meal prep and kitchen cleaning procedures are followed by employees and volunteers
  • Follow standard health and sanitation procedures as required by the Pima County Health Department, including but not limited to:
  • Provide servers with disposable gloves, head coverings or rubber bands, and proper kitchen utensils
  • Ensure proper temperature of food is maintained at all times, and keep daily temperature logs
  • Ensure that equipment is working properly and maintain necessary temperature logs
  • Inventory food necessities weekly and submit to vendors on time
  • Inventory kitchen supplies weekly, including paper products needed for meals
  • Date and properly store all donated or purchased foods using a first-in, first-out procedure, and rotating supplies as needed
  • Ensure proper and timely disposal of outdated foods and/or drinks
  • Planning and preparing meals ahead of time to maintain flow and ensure meals are not interrupted
  • Supervise delivery of meals by meal teams, supporting and assisting them as needed
  • Prepare and serve meals on days not provided by volunteers, using donated foods as much as possible
  • Coordinate delivery and pick up of food supplies from outside vendors, which may include use of a Primavera vehicle as approved
  • Issue receipts for donations as appropriate and follow the donation process
  • Submit maintenance requests following the maintenance protocol
  • Attend 1:1 meetings, staff meetings, off‑site all‑staff meetings, and other training sessions and meetings as requested
  • Become familiar with shelter policies and procedures, kitchen rules, and other facility protocols to enforce shelter guidelines and maintain a safe and peaceful environment at all times
  • Adherence to and demonstration of Primavera’s guiding principles of integrity, respect, accountability, compassion, and leadership

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the first‑in, first‑out process
  • Knowledge of issues facing people who are homeless
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including participants, volunteers, and other shelter staff, in a respectful, professional manner
  • Knowledge of the operations of a kitchen, preparing food, and serving up to 60 people at a time
  • Experience and proficiency in taking inventory
