The University of Arizona's School of Geography, Development & Environment within the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites you to apply to the role of Research Technician II (Temporary). The Research Technician will use dendrochronological methods to prepare, date, measure, and analyze tree-ring samples from Arctic environments. The technician will use standard dendrochronological procedures to mount and surface samples returned from the field.

They will be responsible for creating digital scans of each image and measuring the annual ring width. Using these measurements, the technician will verify dating and conduct quality control and verification on measurements and assigned dates.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Sample Preparation & Equipment Operation
    • Mount, sand, surface, and prepare tree-ring samples from Alaska and Canada.
    • Operate and troubleshoot specialized imaging scanners and laboratory equipment.
    • Participate in calibration and validation of laboratory instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Lab Research & Data Collection
    • Perform lab tests following established protocols and ensure proper execution.
    • Collect, compile, and manage research data; perform basic calculations, statistical quality control, and verification of measurements and dating accuracy.
    • Assist with routine laboratory research activities under general supervision while adhering to approved procedures.
  • Documentation & Quality Control
    • Maintain detailed records of procedures, observations, results, and any deviations from standard methodologies in accordance with research standards.
    • Handle all aspects of sample and information intake, ensuring data completeness and integrity.
  • Lab Support
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment; ensure equipment and instruments are properly maintained and functional.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
  • Knowledge of dendrochronological methods including fieldwork, sample preparation in the woodshop, digital imaging/scanning, and cross-dating.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
