NOTE:
This posting is for applicants who wish to test in Tucson, Arizona. Current vacancies are in Metro Phoenix and Northern Arizona.
Applicants who meet the qualifications will be placed on an 18‑month eligibility list to fill future Cadet State Trooper vacancies. Successful completion of the written portion will allow placement on the list, and future attempts will be provided to complete the physical fitness portion if not initially successful.
Testing Schedule and LocationTesting will be held on Saturday, July 11th at 7:00 AM at Pima Community College – West Campus, 2202 W Anklam, Tucson, Arizona 85709. The test consists of a written (multiple‑choice) exam and a physical fitness test.
Physical Fitness Requirements- Push‑ups: 30 (male), 15 (female)
- Sit‑ups: 35 in 60 seconds (male), 32 in 60 seconds (female)
- 300‑meter sprint: 61 seconds (male), 71 seconds (female)
- 1.5‑mile run: 14:54 minutes (male), 15:05 minutes (female)
- Learn patrol, investigation, traffic control and safety, police methods, first aid, and community and police relations.
- Learn federal, state, and local traffic and criminal laws.
- Learn Department policies and procedures.
- Prepare clear, concise, and grammatically correct reports.
- Participate in a physical fitness program to develop the physical skills necessary for the job.
- Learn proper work habits, appearance, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of English grammar and composition.
- Skill in the operation of a vehicle.
- Ability to analyze situations or information and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.
- Ability to maintain composure and work effectively under highly stressful conditions.
- Ability to read and understand complex written information.
- Ability to observe and recollect details.
- Ability to understand and follow oral directions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work any hours including weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, call‑outs, and overtime.
- Ability to perform work for extended periods of time in environments of extreme heat or cold, or wet conditions.
- Ability to use specialized protective equipment or clothing.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the work (run and/or jump over rough terrain and obstacles; take custody of persons; subdue and apprehend combative suspects; search persons and places; push or pull heavy objects; use force with upper and lower body; reach, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and turn).
- Ability to perform basic mathematics and statistical calculations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a computer to input and retrieve information.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be a high school graduate or have a GED.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the completion of AZ P.O.S.T. Basic Training Curriculum.
- By the starting date, must be a resident of the state of Arizona and possess a valid Arizona driver license.
- Must successfully complete the examination process.
- FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt.
Employees hired into the classification prior to the start of the training academy will be placed at step 1 of the salary range. All employees in the classification while actively assigned to the training academy will be placed at step 2 of the salary range.
Accept assignments anywhere in the state if offered a position as a State Trooper. Duty assignments will not be fully confirmed until after successful completion of training and certification as a peace officer by AZ P.O.S.T., depending on Department operational needs.
