The General Maintenance Mechanic, reporting to the General Maintenance Superintendent, plays an integral part of a team responsible for the repair and maintenance of university dorms, apartments and related building systems. This position requires driving University vehicles and/or golf carts.

Housing & Residential Life (Housing), a self‑funded auxiliary housed within Campus Life at the University of Arizona, operates 23 dorms and 1 graduate apartment complex that house over 8,000 students annually on the University of Arizona Main Campus. More than 80% of on‑campus residents are first‑year students. Our dorms range in style from historic to modern and range in size from 60 to 1,000 residents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Repair, replace and/or install a wide range of building items including, but not limited to: windows and other glazing needs, doors and screens, casement furnishings, floor coverings, ceramic tile, light fixtures and other electrical fixtures and appliances; plumbing fixtures, window coverings, and other items typical to large residential environments.
  • Perform general painting, plumbing and carpentry repairs, such as, unstopping plumbing fixtures, resetting electrical circuit breakers, replacing ballasts, minor furniture repair, caulking and paint touch up.
  • Repair HVAC fan coils including but not limited to motors, speed switches, coil fin cleaning and filters.
  • Supervises a combination of temporary laborers and student staff for all summer room turns in assigned districts dorms.
  • Assures safety standards with inspections and replacement of, but not limited to, security lights, minor security door hardware, fire extinguishers and assists in fire marshal walks.
  • Perform facility inspections including but not limited to maintenance work request, building condition and outside grounds condition.
  • Communicate with vendors, dorm staff, other Housing staff members and student residents on status of work requests and related needs.
  • Maintain inventory, tools, and equipment.
  • Lead work of assigned staff/students.
  • Assist with various departmental activities during the August summer move‑in process.
  • Oversee assigned building area keeping contact with staff and CD for any emergency issues.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet Housing and University goals and objectives.

SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Housing & Residential Life is a security sensitive department, and this position requires a finger‑print criminal background check.
  • Motor Vehicle Division check.
