Position: Sheet Metal Installer I, II, III

Position Overview

As a Sheet Metal Installer (Levels I–IV), you will fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal ductwork and HVAC components for commercial projects. Beginning at the entry‑level, you progress to master‑level expertise in dry‑side systems, collaborating with teams, foremen, and other trades to produce code‑compliant systems that support safe, efficient, and sustainable facilities nationwide. Duties vary by level and increase in independence, complexity, and leadership.

  • Level I (Entry‑Level): Assist experienced installers with basic fabrication, assembly, layout, cutting, bending, sealing, and general site cleanup. Ensure safety briefings and learn dry‑side HVAC basics on‑the‑job.
  • Level II (Mid‑Level): Independently handle standard fabrication, installation, and repairs; perform quality checks, minor troubleshooting, duct sealing, and documentation; mentor Level I installers.
  • Level III (Senior‑Level): Lead advanced installations, modifications, and repairs; conduct equipment startups, functional testing, system balancing; troubleshoot complex issues; provide coaching to Levels I–II.
  • Level IV (Master/Lead‑Level): Collaborate with project leadership to develop task plans, labor/material requirements, takeoffs, and sequencing; oversee daily crew functions, scheduling, inspections, reports; train and mentor crew; drive efficiency and safety across jobsites.

All levels enforce strict safety protocols, document work accurately, and pursue professional growth.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Level I & II: No formal supervision; may offer informal guidance.
  • Level III: Coach and mentor Levels I–II; may lead sections of the jobsite.
  • Level IV: Directly lead and supervise crews; delegate tasks, monitor performance and safety, resolve conflicts, and collaborate with field leadership.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Experience (varies by level):
    • Level I: 0–3 years in construction or related field; no prior HVAC experience required.
    • Level II: 3–5 years in commercial sheet‑metal/HVAC installation/fabrication.
    • Level III: 5+ years with mastery‑level knowledge.
    • Level IV: 5+ years (typically 8+ preferred) with full mastery and crew‑leading experience.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship, or certifications preferred.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, maintain hand/power tool use, stand and walk frequently.
  • Work Environment / Safety: Field‑based in commercial/industrial settings; exposure to noise, dust, heights, and mechanical hazards; must comply with OSHA regulations and wear required PPE.
  • Occasional regional travel or on‑call rotations may be required.
Required Skills (Progressive By Level)
  • Level I:
    Basic tool operation, material handling, safety awareness, following instructions.
  • Level II:
    Proficient sheet‑metal tools, blueprint reading basics, duct sealing/balancing, teamwork.
  • Level III:
    Advanced fabrication, SMACNA mastery, startup/testing/troubleshooting, leadership, OSHA 30‑hour preferred.
  • Level IV:
    Project planning, crew supervision, reporting, decision‑making under pressure, excellent communication.
