Job Summary

Pima County's Facilities Management department is hiring a Trades Maintenance Specialist I to lead, participate in, or operate independently on journey-level maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, fabrication, construction, and preventive maintenance tasks. The position requires technical skills, experience and knowledge in the area of specialization and is accountable for activities, ensuring services or products comply with written procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, industry standards and statutory codes and requirements.

Functions
  • Performs skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles;
  • Leads fabrication and modifications of equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings;
  • Inspects, services, and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles;
  • Conducts quality‑control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing necessary corrective actions for optimal performance;
  • Inspects, approves, or certifies the work of others, if certified or authorized;
  • Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems;
  • Prepares oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects;
  • Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors;
  • Coordinates activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions;
  • Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided;
  • Conducts on‑the‑job training for employees in the assigned work‑unit;
  • Manages the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols;
  • Maintains security and accountability for all tools, equipment, and materials, especially in sensitive environments (e.g., medical, law enforcement, correctional settings);
  • Ensures the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implements work‑site traffic control procedures;
  • Oversees the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years journey‑level experience in building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical; or
  • Two years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Apprentice or closely related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in general building maintenance, including repairing or replacing commercial/institutional‑grade plumbing fixtures, evaporative cooling tower maintenance, and participating in aggressive preventive maintenance programs.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing air handling equipment: bearings, shafts, fans, pulleys, dampers, belts, chilled and hot water coils; filter changes, lubricate, inspect, and document HVAC and chilled water equipment; calibrating or replacing pneumatic and low‑voltage thermostats.
  • Experience servicing and repairing commercial lighting fixtures, light controls, switches, and receptacles; troubleshooting electrical motors and motor control centers; lock‑out/tag‑out compliance procedures; and use of voltage meter and amp probes.
Licenses and Certificates

Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid Arizona driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at the time of appointment.
