Telecommunication Field Technician
The Telecommunication Field Technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs telecommunications systems and network infrastructure, including fiber optic, copper, wireless, voice, data, and internet services. This position performs field work at customer locations and telecommunications facilities, ensuring reliable connectivity and service delivery while adhering to safety and industry standards.
Principle Duties and ResponsibilitiesKnowledge of:
- Principles of telecommunications, broadband, and network communications systems.
- Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic and copper cabling systems.
- Fiber optic splicing, termination, testing, and certification methods.
- TCP/IP networking fundamentals, including LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and internet connectivity.
- Telecommunications equipment such as routers, switches, modems, wireless access points, and VoIP devices.
- Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) telecommunications infrastructure.
- Industry standards and best practices for cabling, telecommunications, and network installations.
- Telecommunications safety practices, including ladder safety, electrical safety, and confined space awareness.
- Use of testing and diagnostic equipment such as OTDRs, fiber power meters, cable certifiers, and network analyzers.
- Customer service principles and techniques.
- Recordkeeping and documentation procedures.
- Yaqui culture, customs, resources, traditions, and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills:
- Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting telecommunications and network equipment.
- Performing fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing.
- Diagnosing connectivity, performance, and service-related issues.
- Reading and interpreting network diagrams, construction drawings, and technical documentation.
- Operating telecommunications testing and diagnostic tools.
- Installing and repairing aerial, underground, and indoor cabling systems.
- Documenting work activities, service requests, and network changes accurately.
- Managing multiple assignments and prioritizing workload effectively.
- Communicating technical information to customers and non-technical personnel.
- Utilizing computer systems, mobile devices, and work order management applications.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public.
Abilities:
- Analyze technical problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, and staff.
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
- Adapt to changing technologies, work environments, and priorities.
- Follow detailed technical procedures and safety protocols.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain.
- Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
- Climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Respond to emergency service outages and participate in on-call rotations when required.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect organizational information and assets.
- Travel to multiple work sites throughout the service area.
