Position in the Family Services Unit works with potentially at-risk youth inside the context of their own community environment, providing family-based intervention services and assisting families to address identified needs. Families served have issues in areas such as child abuse and neglect, delinquency, parent‑child conflict, alcohol and/or drug abuse, uncontrollability, and developmental disabilities.

Full‑time position
  • Exercises powers and performs duties of intake workers pursuant to Wisconsin State Statutes §48.067 and §938.067
    • Provides intake services to individuals with whom they are working for the purpose of screening children taken into custody and not released under §48.20(2) and §938.20(2)
    • Interviews any child who is taken into physical custody and not released or is going to be placed in a secure detention facility, and interviews other available concerned parties
      • Consults with the child's parent or a responsible adult, if child cannot be interviewed
    • Determines whether the child shall be held under §48.205 and §938.205 and such policies as the Judge shall promulgate under §48.06 (1) or (2) and §938.06 (1) or (2)
      • If the child is not released, determines where the child shall be held
    • Takes juveniles into custody under §938.355 (6d)(a)
  • Develops a database of youth and their families; completes reports, notes, and written assignments; completes other paperwork as necessary
  • Provides leadership role in the acquisition of services and provides lead clinical decisions in dealing with youth and their families
    • Assesses and develops goal-oriented, time limited, family based service plans to address identified needs
    • Works to protect children, preserve families, or to keep out‑of‑home placement at minimum effective levels
    • Works to achieve active involvement and participation of the child, family, schools, health care providers, and other appropriate community resources in resolving problems
    • Teaches families about available community resources and how to independently gain access to needed services; advises families when services are either not available or inappropriate
    • Explains the consequences of non‑compliance with court orders to families who are involuntarily referred, monitors family utilization of services, and informs the court of family's adherence to court orders
    • Coordinates families' access to services, provides short‑term case monitoring to ensure that services are provided in an appropriate and timely manner, reviews family progress, and terminates services when family reaches stated goals
  • Works to achieve services and treatment objectives without duplication of effort and with maximum effective use of staff time and available resources.
  • Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings, supervision times, and other regularly scheduled meetings
    • Develops professional knowledge and skills by attending training events, conferences, and workshops
  • Speaks to the community and other organizations to provide public education
  • Participates in developing and delivering group programs and services for families (such as family incest treatment, parenting and nurturing, support groups)
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field
  • Three (3) years of paid, full‑time work experience in a social work position
  • Must be in compliance with State of Wisconsin Social Worker Certification requirements as a condition of employment by meeting one of the following requirements
    • Certified as a Social Worker in Wisconsin
    • Be certification eligible and become certified within specified time limits
    • Possess a temporary certificate or a temporary training certificate and become certified within specified time limits
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of criminal and caregiver background checks
  • Must have access to private transportation at all times for work-related duties
