- Hiring Range: $18.24 - $21.44 Per Hour (estimate of offer)
- Pay Range: $18.24 - $24.64 Per Hour (entire compensation range)

Position OverviewThis part‑time position has rotating days including weekends, and both day and evening hours, in the Recreation Division of the Parks & Recreation Department. The role involves teaching learn‑to‑swim classes, safeguarding patrons at public swimming pool facilities through observation and intervention, ensuring safety through rule enforcement, and maintaining sanitation standards. The position may also temporarily supervise the facility in the absence of a Lifeguard III.
EssentialFunctions
- Conducts swimming lessons in accordance with the Starfish Aquatics Institute methods and procedures;
- Oversees activities at a public swimming pool which includes rule and behavior enforcement;
- Conducts surveillance duties while on stand and intervenes with appropriate water rescues and skills;
- Recognizes and responds effectively to emergency situations by activating and participating in the Emergency Action Plan;
- Attends and participates in all required staff in‑services;
- Administers first aid including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED);
- Maintains facility sanitation, cleaning, and pool vacuuming, which includes testing and logging pool water for chemical balance, reporting chemical imbalances and/or safety concerns to the pool supervisor;
- Assists with a variety of aquatic programs which can include junior lifeguarding and swim team, etc.;
- Provides a welcoming environment for all patrons;
- Documents incidents and/or injuries;
- May assist in recording daily participation numbers, collecting basic daily revenue, reconciling daily revenue, and making nightly deposits.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate on the date of appointment;
- Successful completion of a Pima County held Starfish Aquatics Institute – Swim Instructor certification (SSI) within the first six months of appointment.

Selection ProcedurePima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised preferred qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources.
Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
Licenses and
Certifications:
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate on date of appointment. Successful completion of a Pima County held Starfish Aquatics Swim Instructor certification is required within the first six (6) months of appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain both required certifications shall be grounds for termination.
Special Notice Items: Per Administrative Procedures 23‑31, certified Lifeguard applicants may be employed at age fifteen and six months (15.5) for on‑boarding and required in‑house trainings, but will not work as a functional Lifeguard providing surveillance and supervision of a County‑owned public swimming pool until age sixteen (16). As a condition of employment or continued employment, positions within this classification may be required to submit to a criminal history background check with state and federal agencies pursuant to A.R.S. 41‑1750 and Public Law 92‑544.
The County requires pre‑employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post‑offer, pre‑employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
