Salary: $37,838 - $50,848 ($4,000 Hiring Incentive). Anticipated hourly: $18.19 - $24.45. Grade: 14-19

Job Summary

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties

Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14): Entry level position for the Highway Operations Technician series. Duties include operating motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care.

Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17): Apprentice classification. Trained to perform more advanced duties, similar to above, plus additional responsibilities.

Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18): Entry-level journey classification. Performs a broad scope of intermediate level highway operational duties and lead responsibilities. Responsibilities include operating motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care; plus scheduling, assigning, overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training, and guiding staff.

Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19): Full journey classification. Performs high level highway operation duties and supervisory responsibilities, including all tasks listed above, and supervisory duties such as scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates, inspecting work, training, and guiding staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Highway Operations Worker: At least 6 months of roadway/highway job‑related experience, including operation of motorized vehicles and heavy‑equipment, signing/striping of roadways, pavement care and preservation, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care and preservation.

Highway Operations Tech 1: At least 1 year of roadway/highway experience with same duties.

Highway Operations Tech 2: At least 2 years of roadway/highway experience.

Highway Operations Tech 3: At least 3 years of roadway/highway experience.

Selective Preference(s)

Preference of six months experience in related fields for Highway Operations Worker.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Highway Operations Worker: Must obtain a valid Arizona CDL Class “A” permit within 90 days of hire and a Class “A” commercial driver’s license within 6 months of hire.

Highway Operations Tech 1‑3: Must possess a valid Arizona Class “A” commercial driver’s license for manual or automatic transmission and an (N) tanker endorsement before the start date; additional endorsements may be required.

All positions require a valid driver’s license. Drivers must maintain a current, unexpired, valid license, complete all required training, and pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. Employees driving on state business must maintain statutorily required liability insurance.

All CDL holders must register with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and allow ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of employment.

Position requires 24/7 emergency response capability; must be able to respond to the maintenance yard within 30 minutes. Work may involve extremes of heat, cold, rugged terrain, high‑speed traffic, and may require lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs. Licensing to dispense herbicides/pesticides may be required.
