Lead Software Systems Engineer

Lead Software Systems Engineer at The Boeing Company – Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS). This role supports the E‑7A Mission team in Tukwila, WA, translating system‑level requirements into software requirements and models to ensure traceability and alignment with the customer’s operational and performance needs. The position focuses on developing next‑generation Open Mission Software (OMS) Battle Management Command & Control (BMC2) Software for the USAF E‑7A and other airborne surveillance, command and control programs such as E‑3 AWACS and 767 AWACS.

100% onsite in Tukwila, WA.

• Lead design, development, and maintenance of software systems meeting stringent quality, safety, security, and certification standards.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define system requirements and translate them into software requirements and models.
• Conduct and review software system‑level analyses to identify risks, issues, and opportunities; lead mitigation efforts.
• Lead code reviews ensuring compliance with requirements and standards.
• Oversee test completion, verification processes, and issue resolution.
• Develop program documentation as needed.
• Monitor product and process alignment with project plans and industry standards.
• Lead software project management and assist with supplier management activities.
• Implement current and emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks relevant to software development.

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Active Secret U.S. Security Clearance (considered active if maintained within the past 24 months).
• 9+ years of experience with software development processes.
• 5+ years of experience designing and developing software using Python, C/C++, C#, and/or Java.
• Experience with tactical data links (e.g., Link‑16).
• Experience with integrated ground and flight command, control, and communication systems.
• Experience in a customer‑facing role.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science and 9+ years of related work experience; or
• Bachelor’s Degree and 13+ years of directly related work experience; or
• 17+ years of related, relevant experience.
• Hands‑on experience with Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) and Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), including TTNT and TDMA technologies.
• MIDS integration with Link‑16 network experience.
• Experience with Command and Control (C2) instances.
• Experience with MIL‑STD‑6016 (Link‑16) systems and standards.
• Proficiency in Information Exchange Requirements (IER), with the ability to trace from J messages to requirements (and vice versa).
• Experience in software systems engineering within defense or aerospace sectors.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle and quality assurance.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
