Machine Design – Engineer I
Machine Design – Engineer I at Amentum Advanced Solutions, a performance unit of our Engineering & Technology Line of Business, involves designing, constructing, and operating unique and complex research and development facilities such as wind tunnels, rocket test stands, climatic chambers, and nuclear facilities. Projects span the automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace markets, with clients including Audi, Boeing, NASA, and U.S. government agencies.
Most designs are unique, often starting from a blank sheet of paper, and you will work on several projects simultaneously in a dynamic, challenging, and enjoyable environment.
This entry-level or early‑career Mechanical Engineer will focus on machine design and related multidisciplinary projects, reporting to a supervising engineer and working closely with structural, process, controls, instrumentation, and fluid dynamics teams.
Duties and Responsibilities- Independently perform short‑duration project tasks with clearly defined requirements and goals.
- Analyze and evaluate the results of an analysis using techniques prescribed by senior engineers or supervisors.
- Accomplish tasks of limited scope or solve problems that require investigation of a limited number of variables.
- Prepare calculations and assist in the preparation of presentations and technical reports.
- Support interface development with other disciplines, working closely with structural, mechanical process, controls and instrumentation, and aerodynamics/fluid dynamics engineers.
- Aid in producing complete, detailed drawing packages by supplying design input or performing CAD work.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited engineering school.

- Mechanical Engineering internships and/or co‑ops, especially in machine design or adjacent industries.
- 3D CAD experience;
Inventor or Solid Works preferred. - FEA software experience;
Ansys, NASTRAN, and/or Inventor preferred. - Machining and fabrication experience (milling, turning, welding, laser‑cutting, forming).
- Basic experience with machine instrumentation (proximity sensors, vision sensors, strain gauges, scales).
- Knowledge of common machine elements: gears, bearings, belts, machine screws, chains, cams, linkages, gear motors, servomotors.
- Adjacent industry experience in aerospace & defense, mechanical design, factory automation (material handling, web handling, process automation), and fluid power (hydraulics / pneumatics).
