Reports to: Public Works Superintendent

Classification: Full Time – Grade 4

SUMMARY

The Public Works Driver I reports to the Public Works Superintendent or Deputy Director of Public Works. Work is performed in the operation of trucks, such as flat bed or dump truck in the delivery of rock, dirt or other supplies as well as the collection of garbage and trash. This position may be required to perform duties of Public Works Driver II and III, Equipment Operator and Laborer.

EXAMPLES

OF RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates equipment and vehicles, manual and power maintenance tools including a variety of hand tools in either the Street or Sanitation division.
  • Collect, load and haul debris from city right‑of‑ways and other city properties such as cemeteries using appropriate equipment when needed and ensuring that it is properly loaded.
  • Completes a variety of projects in a timely and safe manner and communicates with supervisors on project completion and any obstacles.
  • Inspects equipment/vehicles and notify supervisor and/or Fleet Maintenance Supervisor of any mechanical problems.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining tools, equipment/vehicles and shop area.
  • Work independently or function as a crew leader when working together with a small crew.
  • Observe traffic conditions, motorists, pedestrians, weather, overhead power lines and co‑workers to complete routes in a safe manner and to be aware of hazards at work sites.
  • Complete required paperwork such as daily work sheets, maintenance reports, and other documents as required.
  • Serves as back up driver to Driver II and Driver III and works alternate schedule as needed.
  • Interacts and responds to questions from residents in a professional, respectful and courteous manner.
  • Required to work overtime as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Able to operate all department equipment that requires a CDL license and general vehicle maintenance knowledge.
  • Knowledge of State and City traffic regulations and department rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of street system and physical layout of the City.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions.
  • Able to plan and direct the work of crew members.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, in respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and colleagues
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School or GED required.
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee Class A or Class B license.
  • Experience operating vehicle or equipment requiring a CDL preferred.
  • Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADA REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements -Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items up to one hundred pounds; may involve the complex operation of gasoline, electric or diesel‑powered machinery or shop equipment requiring the manipulation of multiple controls.

May work in adverse environmental conditions.

Sensory Requirements - Tasks require visual perception and discrimination including color and depth. Tasks require perception and discrimination of odor and sound.
