Teacher Assistant

CHARACTERISTICS
:
Under the general direction of the school principal, and under the immediate supervision of a teacher holding a valid state certificate directly engaged in teaching subject matter, assists in the instruction of pupils and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

• Assists in supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities and monitors corridors and student identification cards.
• Provides tutoring services under classroom teacher supervision.
• Assists teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying student work.
• Operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials.
• Maintains orderly arrangement of classrooms, greets and directs visitors.
• Consults with teachers regarding concerns of individual students.
• Operates audio‑visual equipment such as video projectors and tape recorders.
• Assists in collecting and grading student homework and examination materials.
• Assists in supervising loading and unloading of students on school buses.
• Assists in receiving, processing, and issuing new books under teacher supervision.
• Collects daily classroom absentee reports and contacts parents to verify causes of absences.
• May assist elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a valid TASN paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education.
• Good knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, basic knowledge of mathematics, knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.
• Ability to work with school‑aged children, follow written and oral instructions, operate basic office equipment, communicate effectively with the public.
• Good oral and written communication skills, good reading skills.
• Physical requirement: light work – up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently.
