Job Overview
Clary Sage College is seeking a Fashion Design Instructor Substitute. Associate's or Bachelor's degrees in design, fine arts, or related fields are preferred. Minimum three years of fashion design industry field experience is required. Knowledge of textiles, fashion trends, color theory, design concepts, and a commitment to and demonstrated experience in education and student development are essential. The instructor will engage students in creating designs for apparel, shoes, and accessories, predict buyer trends, and assist with curriculum development using hand-drawn and computer-aided design.
Responsibilities- Teach students in-person and online classes (using Zoom) through lectures, discussions, and hands‑on lab training.
- Conduct weekly "live" video lectures and/or discussions as needed.
- Counsel students professionally, offering constructive, encouraging, and timely feedback.
- Participate actively in course discussions, ensuring all students are engaging and interacting.
- Assess students’ progress by grading assignments, exams, and other work.
- Document grades and attendance, post to transcript accordingly, and maintain a working knowledge of Canvas.
- Perform instructional assistance, tutoring, and related support functions as needed.
- Adhere to curriculum expectations to ensure accreditation standards are met.
- Support student retention by reviewing completion of learning activities, monitoring attendance, and contacting students as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 3 verifiable recent years of fashion design experience.
- Degree in Fashion Design or related field (preferred).
- Knowledge of CAD program (plus).
- Experience with Canvas and Zoom (plus).
- Teaching experience preferred.
- Communication and customer service skills.
- Licensed by OBPVS.
- Effective communication skills and knowledge of subject areas: history, business, pattern‑making, sewing, retailing, marketing, fashion sketching, and CAD.
- Creative and stylish with documented history in the fashion industry.
- Desire to see students succeed in the Fashion Design industry by encouraging innovative design, critical thinking, and effective communication.
- Commitment to providing quality education and student development.
- Distance education requires instructors to provide their own hardware (PC or Mac), software, and Internet service when working remotely.
