Salary Grade: Teacher's Salary Schedule

Position Summary: The Secondary School Teacher of Native American Studies presents an Indigenous perspective and introduces the cultures, traditions, governments, languages, arts, contributions, and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The teacher's primary responsibility is to ensure each student masters the objective of each
lesson set forth by the curriculum provided by the district's Office of Indian Education and Social Studies department. Students learn through storytelling, mixed media, guest speakers, and selected literature, as well as other sources curated from tribal nations and resources.
Key Functions:
• Teaches Native American Studies content and skills using district-approved curriculum
• Creates a safe, purposeful, and welcoming classroom focused on learning
• Uses student data to differentiate instruction and drive mastery of standards
• Communicates regularly with students, families, and colleagues
• Participates in professional development and Indian Education events
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
• Bachelor's degree
Experience:
• Experience working with Native American culture, tribes, and community
• Previous experience working with children preferred
• Previous teaching experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications:
• Oklahoma Teaching Certification in an applicable secondary education subject area, or the ability to be Emergency Certified in an appropriate secondary education subject area
• Required to maintain professional certification and attend professional development provided by the district
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Understanding of Indian culture, history, and traditions, as well as resources to enrich Native American student education
• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to implement a classroom behavior management system within the bounds of site procedures that is equitable and restorative
• Ability to establish and maintain systems and routines that create a safe, purposeful, and welcoming classroom environment focused on learning
• Abides by all district guidelines and policies, the State of Oklahoma's Standards of Performance and Conduct for Teachers, and any relevant state statutes
• Required to attend subject area/department training as needed
