Job Summary

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing complex engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economical accomplishment of assigned objectives.

What You’ll Do

Technical Expertise: Demonstrates journey‑level proficiency and advanced knowledge that enables the engineer to serve as a leader within the assigned organization. Keeps abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures, and equipment. Understands and analyzes interrelationships between systems and component equipment. Interprets codes and regulations, and develops relevant standards.

Leadership & Guidance: Provides guidance, exercises judgment, and directs other engineers. Leads, facilitates, and coordinates work activities of others within the team, department, or corporate entity as required. Ensures compliance with company policies, standards, and external regulations. Promotes engineering professionalism and standards. Coordinates and conducts training sessions.

Planning & Organization: Participates in developing plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives, and requirements. Coordinates development of inputs necessary for projected project costs. Proficient in scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Identifies and initiates corrective action when objectives are not being met.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to routine or complex problems. Demonstrates the ability to decompose problems into component steps. Consistently seeks opportunities, presents new ideas, and proposes innovative approaches.

Communication: Coordinates the work of other engineers efficiently. Develops, reviews, or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly and concisely, suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc. Leads and facilitates meetings effectively.

Interpersonal

Skills:

Possesses collaborative and consensus‑building skills. Functions as a team leader and member. Networks upward and downward across disciplines to achieve results.

Decision Making: Makes decisions affecting plans and goals based on analysis of uncertain inputs and outcomes. Uses diverse approaches where frameworks are lacking. Analyzes options and risks to assess decision impact on the department and major projects.

Business Awareness & Characteristics: Exhibits awareness of AEP’s competitive position and how business decisions impact the organization. Understands unit goals and establishes measurable objectives. Manages project budgets, evaluates cost implications, and aligns decisions with AEP’s financial interests. Demonstrates awareness of profit incentives and growth strategies.

What We’re Looking For

2 or more years of related engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET‑accredited program, or 2 years of related engineering experience with a Master’s or PhD from an ABET‑accredited program. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.

Alternative: A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non‑ABET program plus a Master’s or PhD from a university with an ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s program.

Compensation

Grade: SP20‑007
Range: $87,633.00 – $

Physical Demand

Level: S – Sedentary. Involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. May include walking or standing for brief periods. Sedentary work is predominant.
