Job Summary

Performs straight forward network architecture assignments under moderate direction. Uses knowledge to support the planning, researching, evaluating, designing, and developing network systems. Participates in configuration, installation, and performance analysis of networks.

What You’ll Do
  • Participates in design, installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and performance analysis of AEP's intermediate and enterprise telecommunication networks and systems. Follows policies, practices, procedures, standards, and company rules related to assignments. complies with regulations and procedures required by external agencies.
  • Prepares cost estimates for engineering assignments using established guidelines.
  • Documents project work using established guidelines; performs network assignments.
  • Analyzes network performance, troubleshoots when necessary, and provides resolutions to technical problems.
  • Follows standard workflow for engineering projects; applies economic analysis techniques and adheres to budgeting and approval processes in project development.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of AEP networks, components, and facilities to enable more efficient and comprehensive responses to projects and problems.
  • Learns AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of one's organizational unit.
What We’re Looking For

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, telecommunications, or a related field of study.
  • Or associate's degree in one of the aforementioned fields with 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Or HS diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant work experience required.

Experience:

  • 2 years of relevant work experience in addition to any experience mentioned above.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License is required.

Additional qualifications and skills:

  • Strong understanding of IP, DWDM, and SONET transport networks.
  • Strong knowledge of static and dynamic IP networks, QoS policies, and traffic engineering.
  • Design various types of services such as EVPL, EPL, Static, Dynamic, OTN on IP, SONET, DWDM, and Microwave networks.
  • Possesses intermediate level knowledge of communications technologies and inter-networking principles.
  • Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity.
  • Demonstrates understanding of pertinent telecom equipment, materials, systems, and business processes.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand interrelationships between systems and component equipment.
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes.
  • Collaborates with others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to complete routine activities.
  • Provides cross‑training to other employees as assigned.
  • Initiates corrective action when project objectives are not being met.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions.
  • Demonstrates an attitude and desire to listen to and satisfy both internal and external customers who use and depend upon their organizational unit.
  • Uses initiative in looking for opportunities and presenting new ideas and approaches, and relates to people in an open, friendly, and sincere manner.
  • Effectively leads and facilitates meetings.
  • Uses initiative in looking for opportunities to increase job knowledge and technical skills.
  • Occasional travel required.
