Overview

Provides expertise for credit quality and underwriting operations for the market’s commercial loan portfolio. Assists the Chief Lending Officer in credit-related activities by monitoring the performance of the bank’s loan portfolio and maintaining effective credit risk management practices, while identifying emerging risks and preserving profitability for the Bank. Monitors and supports adherence to the credit culture and overall management of the market’s loan portfolio, loan documentation, and credit risk functions.

Serves as an advisor on issues associated with loan policy, deal structuring, underwriting, and other risk management areas. Monitors the safety, soundness, effectiveness and growth of the portfolio and each client relationship to balance credit quality with loan growth targets. Helps develop a strong credit culture and underwriting skills in Commercial Lending team through consistent training and mentoring.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities
  • Partners with the Chief Lending Officer in the management of credit risk through the development and monitoring of key risk indicators, the establishment of meaningful risk tolerances, sound internal controls, operating procedures, and through reoccurring evaluation of market conditions, while maintaining solid underwriting practices.
  • Partners with commercial lending team to maximize portfolio growth while maintaining sound lending standards and acceptable credit risk.
  • Advises commercial team on credit related policy/procedures and credit administration, ensuring sound credit decisions for CRE/C&I loans.
  • Consults on recommended risk ratings during loan origination.
  • Monitors the market’s loan portfolio and commitments to ensure credit quality and standards of the Bank are maintained.
  • Monitors accuracy of risk ratings, accrual status, regulatory compliance, loan policy conformance, and recovery of problem loans and the disposition of foreclosed assets.
  • Recommends operational improvement initiatives for CRE/C&I lending areas and fosters continuous process and culture improvement.
  • Prepares management and regulatory reports regarding loan portfolio performance and trends; completes special projects as assigned within allotted time frames and be accountable for continuous best efforts in such projects.
  • Facilitates credit concurrence and coordinates pricing approvals.
  • Protects the Bank’s assets and maintains quality of portfolio by upholding lending processes, policies and procedures, legal and ethical requirements and regulations, audit requirements, and established risk guidelines. Works with commercial and operations teams to remediate gaps and implement improvements identified between existing practices and regulatory and/or audit requirements.
  • Reports and addresses any known violations of company policy, laws, or regulations, and addresses any suspicious client or account activity.
  • Manages and mentors colleagues to the Bank’s credit culture by training and encouraging growth in credit/underwriting skills.
  • Develops and maintains constructive relationships in all areas of the market and holding company, the financial community, and other institutions to enhance performance and relationships.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This job has supervisory accountability for other employees in the Credit Analysis department.

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus area of finance, economics, or accounting, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • 10+ years commercial lending and/or credit analysis experience
  • Experience in formulating and administering lending policies and procedures
  • Deep knowledge of cash flow, collateral valuation, appraisal procedures, and documentation
  • Ability to establish and effectively communicate the organizational credit risk appetite
  • Formal credit training and prior lending authority
