Responsibilities
The Director of Finance & Accounting is responsible for all financial aspects of the School, including accounting, budgeting, financial planning, audit preparation, risk management, and payroll and benefits administration. This role involves both high-level strategic work and day‑to‑day accounting tasks.
Finance Responsibilities- Coordinate timely preparation of financial statements for the Head of School, Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees.
- Oversee the timely and accurate preparation of reports for all budget holders.
- Prepare annual operations and capital budgets.
- Develop a long‑term, strategic planning budget.
- Establish and maintain internal controls and safeguards.
- Maintain professional relationships with the School’s banks, attorneys, auditors, insurance carriers, contractors, and accrediting organizations.
- Supervise and lead a team of five responsible for Accounting, Payroll & Benefits, and Purchasing & Accounts Payable functions.
- Oversee monthly budget‑to‑actuals analysis and variance analysis; ensure all expenditures are consistent with approved budgets and that the appropriate authority approves any deviations.
- Prepare assigned monthly account analysis and review analyses prepared by others.
- Coordinate and prepare financials and other schedules for the annual independent audit process; interface with independent auditors to secure an annual audit of the School’s financial position.
- Coordinate and prepare schedules for the annual tax return; interface with independent tax preparer to secure timely preparation and filing of the School’s tax return (Form 990).
- Oversee the semi‑monthly payroll process to ensure controls are in place for accurate salaries and deductions.
- Ensure legal compliance and equitable administration of compensation and benefits packages to all employees.
- Oversee the annual benefits enrollment process.
- Oversee the education of employees’ benefit programs.
- Actively participate in ongoing risk assessment and management.
- Contribute to a safe, supportive school environment for all constituents by acting with compassion and integrity in all situations.
- Build collaborative, collegial, and respectful relationships with colleagues and overtly support teachers, administrators, and the Board of Trustees.
- Model the mission of the School to all staff, parents, students, and the community.
- Work in collaboration with other members of the administrative team for the benefit of the School as a whole.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. CPA/MBA preferred.
- Minimum five years of experience working in nonprofit organizations or independent schools.
- Proficiency with Blackbaud and advanced Microsoft Excel.
- Strong math skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Audit experience is a plus.
This position requires general office work with prolonged periods of sitting or standing, keyboard/mouse use, speaking and hearing, traversing the school campus, near and distance vision, attending virtual and in‑person meetings, occasional local driving, occasional lifting up to 20 pounds, and pulling or pushing heavier items.
