The Assistant Director of University Budgets & Financial Reporting supports the Director of Financial Reporting in preparing accurate, timely, and compliant financial statements. This role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with accounting standards (e.g., GAAP), coordinating audits, and strengthening internal financial controls. It is typically a senior individual contributor or people manager role within Finance or Accounting.
Essential Functions (Responsibilities)
- Assist in the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure financial reporting complies with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies
- Support external and internal audits, including coordination with auditors and preparation of audit schedules
- Analyze complex accounting issues and assist with technical accounting research
- Review general ledger activity and account reconciliations for accuracy and completeness
- Assist with financial disclosures, footnotes, and management discussion materials
- Support the implementation and maintenance of internal controls over financial reporting
- Collaborate with budgeting, FP&A, payroll, and operations teams to ensure data integrity
- Prepare reports and presentations for executive leadership and governing bodies
- May supervise or mentor accounting staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 5-8+ years of progressive accounting or financial reporting experience
- Strong knowledge of financial statements, technical accounting, and audit processes
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Workday, Oracle, SAP) and advanced Excel skills
- High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and ability to meet tight deadlines
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Master's Degree preferred within a business discipline
- CPA or progress toward CPA
- Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and handling documents.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of files, boxes, or office supplies (typically up to 20 lbs).
- Visual acuity to review detailed financial data and documents.
- Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and via email.
- Occasional movement within the office and museum environment for meetings and collaboration.
