Job Description Basic PurposePositions in this family provide direct and indirect non‑professional nursing care or outreach services in a clinic, hospital, institution, or home setting under nursing or medical supervision. Duties include taking vital signs, obtaining lab specimens, charting, escorting patients, assisting with activities of daily living, and ordering and receiving supplies.
Typical Functions- Perform direct nursing tasks including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living and hygiene needs, and obtaining certain lab specimens.
- Chart observations and activities, reporting pertinent changes in the patient’s condition.
- Perform delegated or other specialized functions as educationally prepared.
- Escort patients to and from various destinations.
- Assist in maintaining and providing a clean, safe environment.
- Order, receive and store supplies and perform basic clerical functions.
- Participate in follow‑up activities and tracking clients, schedule appointments and perform other related tasks.
- Provide case finding and recruitment of at risk persons for comprehensive health services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.
Specialist level: employees are assigned responsibility for providing more complex patient care tasks and performing more advanced duties.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and CompetenciesMust know how to communicate effectively in English, understand public health services available to the community, keep records, interview techniques, basic nursing practices and techniques, methods of sanitation and personal hygiene, and medical terminology. Must record observations, follow oral and written directions, establish effective working relationships, apply basic nursing techniques, and judge situations accurately to adopt effective action.
Education and ExperienceMinimum: two years of experience in providing patient care.
Special RequirementsRequires a valid Oklahoma driver’s license or a Class C (CDL) Commercial Driver’s License at the time of appointment. Some agencies may require translation of health information for non‑English speaking clients.
Certification requirements:
- Oklahoma State Department of Health CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) for Level I and II; CMA‑A (Certified Medication Aide Advanced) required for Level III.
- Oklahoma State Department of Health CMA (Certified Medication Aide) for all levels of the Patient Care Assistant job family.
- Applicants to Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services must submit to a physical examination and meet physical requirements such as occasionally lifting/carrying 50 pounds and pushing/pulling a maximum of 25 pounds.
- Response to safety sensitive status as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.
- Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse requires the years of experience to be in the behavioral health field.
