Job Description

The ORU Counselor is responsible for individual mental health services and completing biopsychosocial assessments with ORU students. This position will be responsible for providing therapy sessions and connecting students in crisis with other outpatient or inpatient mental health agencies as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Ability to guide a client in a calm, professional manner toward making healthier choices without rendering judgment
  • Providing critical resources and support to individuals in crisis
  • Coordinating intervention strategies, outreach, referrals, and services
  • Assessing patients to determine their needs
  • Handling time-sensitive calls and emails, even during off-hours
  • Organizing patient data and maintaining virtual files
  • Providing individuals in crisis, family members, and the surrounding communities with information as to the nature of the crisis, why it's happening, and what it means for them
  • Maintaining a network of other specialists to whom you can refer the patient for ongoing care once the immediate crisis has passed
  • Understanding how the environment impacts a person's emotional state
  • Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor in all situations, to include emergencies.
Competencies

EDUCATION:

Requires a Master's degree in a counseling related field. Must be actively licensed in Oklahoma as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT or under supervision.

EXPERIENCE/

SKILLS:

  • A minimum of two (2) years experience working in mental health assessment, case management, or crisis intervention.
  • Must be able to assess acuity level of clients to determine appropriate treatment recommendations, and demonstrate skilled judgement and discretion regarding case decisions.
  • A willingness to seek consultation and to work collaboratively with the counseling team and other pertinent university personnel is required.
  • Experience working within an academic environment particularly within a higher educational setting is preferred.
  • Ability to guide a patient in a calm, professional manner toward making healthier choices without rendering judgment
  • "People" skills – the ability to relate to a variety of personality types in people from all walks of life
  • Organizational skills
  • Compassionate listening skills
  • Must be in compliance with protected health information as mandated by HIPPA and/or ORU policy and procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policy and its' procedures and confidentiality regarding internally sensitive information.
