Position Summary:

The Assistive Technology Instructor evaluates, recommends, and provides individualized instruction in assistive and accessible technology to individuals who are blind or have low vision. The role helps clients use technology to increase independence in education, employment, communication, information access, and daily living.

Technology may include screen readers, magnification, mobile and desktop accessibility features, OCR, electronic magnification, braille displays, accessible apps, AI-enabled tools, smart devices, and wearable technology such as smart glasses. The Instructor also researches emerging technology, develops curriculum, supports the Assistive Technology Center, and trains staff and community partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive assistive technology evaluations and develop individualized, measurable training plans.
  • Recommend and demonstrate appropriate hardware, software, devices, accessibility features, and applications.
  • Provide individual and group instruction across Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, and ChromeOS.
  • Teach screen readers, magnification, OCR, braille technology, electronic magnification, mobile accessibility, productivity tools, AI accessibility tools, smart-home technology, and wearable devices.
  • Adapt instruction to each client's vision, hearing, cognitive, physical, literacy, and learning needs.
  • Assist with technology setup, configuration, customization, troubleshooting, and real-world application.
  • Monitor progress, conduct reassessments, and adjust training as needed.
  • Maintain accurate client records, service documentation, reports, billing, mileage, and outcome data while protecting confidentiality.
  • Stay current on emerging assistive technology, AI tools, accessibility features, applications, and devices.
  • Evaluate new technology and maintain New View's assistive technology curriculum, resources, and training standards.
  • Provide technology demonstrations, consultations, and training to staff.
  • Maintain and track Assistive Technology Center equipment and coordinate with IT, vendors, and manufacturers as needed.
  • Collaborate with rehabilitation professionals, educators, employers, families, referral sources, and community partners.
  • Provide community presentations and education regarding blindness, low vision, digital accessibility, accommodations, and assistive technology.
  • Manage caseload, scheduling, travel, documentation, and services across office, home, school, workplace, community, and virtual settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications (Minimum education, experience, training, licensure, certification):

    Required:

    • Bachelor's degree in assistive technology, rehabilitation, education, special education, computer technology, vision rehabilitation, occupational therapy, or related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide assistive technology instruction to individuals who are blind or have low vision.
    • Working knowledge of screen readers, magnification, mobile accessibility, OCR, electronic magnification, and related technology.
    • Strong evaluation, instructional, communication, organizational, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to adapt instruction to different abilities, learning styles, and technology experience levels.
    • Ability to learn and apply emerging technologies.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Basic proficiency with standard workplace technology and electronic recordkeeping.
    • Ability to travel and work in multiple environments.

    Preferred:

    • Certification or graduate-level training in assistive technology, vision rehabilitation, rehabilitation teaching, special education, or related field.
    • JAWS and Zoom Text certifications.
    • Experience with NVDA, Narrator, Voice Over, Talk Back, braille displays, OCR, mobile accessibility, electronic magnification, AI tools, wearable technology, and smart glasses.
    • Two or more years of assistive technology or vision rehabilitation experience.
    • Experience conducting formal evaluations and developing accessible curriculum.
    • Knowledge of braille, nonvisual instructional techniques, vocational rehabilitation, educational accommodations, and workplace accessibility.
    • Experience with electronic medical record systems.
