AboutThompson Creek Mine
The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho’s Custer County. Since 1983 the mine has used conventional open‑pit mining methods with large electric‑powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day. The mine promotes a drug‑ and alcohol‑free workplace and follows a zero‑tolerance policy regarding alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
AboutThe Opportunity
We are looking for a Superintendent, Mill Operations to join our Thompson Creek team.
Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Superintendent, Mill Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective operation of our Mill Operations. The role optimizes mill performance, develops team capability, and drives continuous improvement initiatives across all aspects of mill operations. The Superintendent provides leadership to the mill operations team, ensuring production targets, recovery rates, and quality standards are consistently achieved while maintaining strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations.
Responsibilities- Oversee day‑to‑day mill operations, including crushing, grinding, flotation, and tailings management.
- Manage Mill Operations personnel to ensure adherence to approved procedures and to contribute to quality improvement within the operation.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, recovery, and cost‑effectiveness.
- Execute plans to achieve production targets while optimizing costs and improving safety.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory, environmental, and onsite safety standards.
- Maintain emergency backup procedures for occurrences of mill outages, i.e., equipment breakdowns, power outages.
- Ensure performance of quality control procedures on all incoming feed grades and ore types.
- Maintain systems and processes for operations to meet production targets and reduce losses.
- Prepare and deliver regular operational reports on production, performance, and safety.
- Utilize assets to manage quality outcomes and minimize costs.
- Ensure planning is reliable, robust, and repeatable.
- Achieve or exceed customer expectations by ensuring supply and specifications of product are met.
- Promote employee engagement and retention through strong leadership and communication.
- Influence best practice in planning activities before implementation.
- Align departmental and employee objectives and manage effective leadership, performance management, career development, and succession planning of team personnel.
- Ensure full compliance with MSHA and environmental regulations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in a Supervisor, Superintendent, or leadership role within Mill Operations or Mill Processing.
- Strong knowledge of crushing, grinding, and processing circuits.
- Proven track record of improving Mill performance and leading operational teams.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
- Familiarity with SAP Success Factors is an asset.
