Job Title:

Structural Welder Job Description

This role focuses on structural welding in a high-production fabrication shop, performing MIG and flux core welding on carbon steel in multiple positions while working from clean, code-compliant prints. You will set up and operate welding equipment, interpret blueprints and measurements, and ensure high-quality welds in a steady, growth-oriented environment with both day and night shift options.

Responsibilities
  • Perform structural welding using MIG and flux core processes on carbon steel components in vertical (3G), overhead, horizontal, and other required positions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and tape measurements to plan layouts, fit-ups, and welding procedures accurately.
  • Determine and select appropriate welding equipment, settings, and methods based on job requirements and specifications.
  • Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match required measurements.
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare joints and parts for welding, including cleaning, beveling, and smoothing as needed.
  • Align components using calipers, rulers, and other measuring tools, and clamp pieces securely to ensure accurate fit and alignment before welding.
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to code and shop standards.
  • Grind welds to achieve required finish, remove imperfections, and prepare assemblies for inspection or further fabrication.
  • Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to identify flaws, defects, or nonconformities and make necessary corrections.
  • Set and adjust amperage and voltage on welding machines to achieve proper penetration, bead profile, and weld quality.
  • Maintain welding equipment, tools, and work area in safe, clean, and functional condition, promptly reporting any issues.
  • Work collaboratively within a structural welding shop on a multi-building campus, supporting production goals and meeting deadlines.
  • Follow all safety procedures and participate in the shop’s safety program to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others.
Essential Skills
  • Proficient MIG welding experience with the ability to weld in 3G (vertical), overhead, and horizontal positions.
  • Ability to pass a 3G MIG weld test on 3/8-inch carbon plate, welded out completely.
  • Ability to pass a 4G MIG weld test on a 24-inch-wide, 1/4-inch plate, welded out completely with visible starts and stops.
  • At least 8 months of welding experience in a structural welding shop environment.
  • Hands‑on experience with flux core welding in structural applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, structural drawings, and layout documents.
  • Strong tape measure reading skills and accurate measurement‑taking capabilities.
  • Knowledge and ability to set amperage and voltage on welding machines to match welding procedures and material requirements.
  • Experience operating angle grinders to prepare and finish welds and components.
  • Capability to align and fit structural components using calipers, rulers, and clamps.
  • Ability to grind welds to meet quality and appearance standards.
  • Comfort working in a production‑focused structural welding and fabrication environment.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Structural fitting experience in an industrial or structural fabrication setting is preferred.
  • Experience as a structural welder/fitter with 2 or more years in structural welding and fitting is highly valued.
  • Experience in industrial or production welding environments.
  • Familiarity with working from clean, code‑compliant prints and procedures.
