Disaster Program Specialist, Stillwater, OK
Hours:
8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday; may require weekends and evenings
Travel: up to 25% of the time
Guide, lead, and support teams of trained volunteers to deliver comfort and care in times of disaster and maintain continuous volunteer engagement. Work with volunteers to ensure communities are prepared to respond to disasters.
Regional disaster employees are required to deploy to disaster relief operations outside of their region at least once a year. Employees must meet all training and physical capacity requirements for deployment.
Key Responsibilities- Empower volunteers by facilitating and supporting a diverse volunteer team responsible for implementing volunteer‑led disaster cycle services programming and ensuring rapid, equitable delivery of services.
- Support the successful implementation of specific disaster cycle services program activities or functions within an assigned geographic area.
- Engage primary workforce disaster volunteers who represent the cultural and linguistic diversity of the communities served.
- Support local efforts to prepare, mobilize, and recover communities, and engage partners to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and emergencies.
- Implement plans to meet assigned targets for volunteer engagement and volunteer‑led Disaster Action Team response to local home fires or other specific functions within the geographic area.
- Act as the local point of contact for partners and communities; partner with local organizations and leaders to support frontline communities and community resiliency before, during, and after disasters.
- Participate in disaster response operations in the region in alignment with the Disaster Cycle Services Concept of Operations after completing training requirements.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Experience:
Minimum 3 years in social services, emergency management, disaster relief, nonprofit coordination, or related experience. - Travel:
Required – up to 20% of the time.
Skills and Abilities
- Coordinate staff and volunteer activities.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse groups and represent all demographics of the community, manage multiple priorities, facilitate, problem‑solve, market, lead, and partner.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work outside regular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Chapter‑based positions:
Work daily in the assigned geographic area to engage and mobilize communities and support volunteers. - Regional positions:
Work daily within the region’s geographic area to provide leadership, functional support, and community engagement.
Regularly required to sit, use hands, talk or hear, reach, and, occasionally, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently lift or move up to 15 pounds and sometimes up to 30 pounds. Must have clear and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus. Work environment may have moderate noise.
