Research Specialist I

Job Summary:

The Research Specialist I participates in development and carrying out of research studies, in support of one or more principal investigators and may be assigned to a single laboratory, a research core service group, or a combination. The Research Specialist I utilizes all skills necessary to the specific research needs of the principal investigator which may be inclusive of:
Psychiatric, patient-oriented skills; computing and programming skills; technical skills relating to the techniques and tools being applied in the research arena; data analysis skills. The RSI also supports the daily and weekly regular process and procedures of the laboratory - such as data integrity, backup, quality control. Operating with a high degree of independence, under supervision of principal investigator the RSI operates in problem-solving mode, working with a high degree of non-routine, unique situations, requiring ability to analyze options and determine course of action while working with scientists, technicians, assessment team, all members of research teams, IT group, research subjects, etc.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in a related and appropriate scientific, computing or related field.

Work Experience:

1 - 2 years related and relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proficient in advanced scientific procedures, tools, concepts, techniques used in investigator's lab and or service core. Ability to work within each lab and utilize the specific knowledge and skill requirements needed. Good verbal, writing, reporting, organizational and communication skills. Ability to learn new advanced concepts, techniques with minimal oversight. Ability to work independently under the investigator's supervision.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Responsible for assisting in management of multiple research studies, under direction of principal investigator. Specific tasks will vary depending on research needs of lab. 2. Duties may be inclusive of being responsible for consenting research participants and coordinating participants' research interactions.
3. Responsible for developing and setting up new equipment and software for conducting research experiments, as needed, and for collecting research data. May perform programming to develop or enhance image processing, acquisition, or analysis tools.
4. Responsible for daily and weekly management of research data, to assure data integrity, quality, backup, security and availability.
5. Performs data analyses using statistical and imaging software, or other analytic tools and methods. 6. May provide support to other principal investigators and may train and assist other LI  staff in areas of special knowledge.
7. Responsible for presenting research findings at LI  meetings and seminars. Participates in writing manuscripts, protocols, and grant applications.

Decision Making:
Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.

Working Relationships:
Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
