Job Summary

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are integral to the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers cheerfully, answer questions, and consistently connect readers with the right titles and products. You aid in maintaining an attractive presentation of the store, ensure efficient operation, unpack and shelve deliveries, and work registers quickly and friendly to provide highly professional service.

Required Skills and Competencies
  • Use varied technology: registers, computers, tablets, programs and other tools comfortably and efficiently.
  • Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
  • Develop effective visual merchandising skills for gifting, toys and other product categories.
  • Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
  • Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries; ensure accurate shelving.
  • Find books and products accurately, using knowledge, colleagues, Book Master and other tools.
  • Support café team when needed.
  • Understand loss prevention procedures and de‑escalation techniques; identify theft and problematic behavior, seek support.
  • Perform physical tasks: prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting and walking.
  • Work in other stores if required to support the Cluster.
Professional Growth
  • Build book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction and children’s books.
  • Use knowledge to maintain sections and present books attractively.
  • Make effective book recommendations across varied sections.
  • Sell books in a positive manner, supporting key sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders, etc., sharing this knowledge with customers and colleagues.
  • Gain knowledge of Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand; learn new areas throughout the store.
  • Maintain all sections and backstock effectively, assisting customers.
  • Support key sales objectives, products and new releases.
  • Enjoy being a bookseller at Barnes & Noble; advance to Senior Bookseller as mastery is achieved.
