Smoking Attendant

Position Summary

The Smoking Attendant is responsible for supervising designated resident smoking areas and ensuring that residents who choose to smoke do so in a safe, orderly, and compliant manner. The Smoking Attendant monitors residents during designated smoking times, assists with maintaining a safe environment, follows facility smoking and fire-safety procedures, and promptly reports any concerns or incidents to the appropriate supervisor.

• Monitor designated smoking areas during scheduled smoking times.

• Supervise residents while they are in the designated smoking area.

• Ensure residents follow all facility smoking rules, schedules, and safety procedures.

• Maintain awareness of residents entering and leaving the designated smoking area.

• Verify that only authorized residents use the designated smoking area.

• Assist residents with safely accessing and exiting the designated smoking area as appropriate.

• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe smoking area.

• Monitor for unsafe smoking practices, including improperly discarded cigarettes or smoking materials.

• Ensure cigarettes, lighters, ashes, and other smoking materials are handled and disposed of according to facility policy.

• Immediately report smoking-related hazards, fire hazards, or unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor.

• Follow all facility fire prevention and emergency procedures.

• Never leave residents unattended in the designated smoking area when supervision is required.

• Observe residents for signs of distress, injury, illness, dizziness, or other changes in condition and immediately notify nursing staff when concerns arise.

• Report resident behaviors or incidents that may pose a safety risk.

• Assist with maintaining appropriate resident behavior and a respectful environment in the smoking area.

• Maintain professional boundaries with residents and do not accept money, gifts, or personal items from residents.

• Protect resident privacy and confidentiality at all times.

• Complete required smoking logs, attendance records, safety checks, and incident reports accurately and timely.

• Communicate relevant concerns to nursing staff, supervisors, or administration.

• Follow infection-control, safety, resident-rights, and facility policies.

• Work cooperatively with nursing and other departments to support resident safety.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator, supervisor, or designated facility leadership.

The Smoking Attendant is responsible for maintaining a safe environment while respecting each resident’s dignity and rights. The employee must remain attentive and immediately report any situation that could place a resident or others at risk.

The Smoking Attendant should not provide cigarettes, tobacco products, lighters, or other smoking materials to residents unless specifically authorized by facility policy and job duties.

The Smoking Attendant must immediately notify nursing staff if a resident:

• Appears ill, injured, confused, or unusually drowsy.

• Experiences difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or other concerning symptoms.

• Falls or sustains an injury.

• Attempts to leave the designated smoking area without authorization when supervision is required.

• Demonstrates behavior that creates a safety concern.

• Requires medical assistance.

• Follow all facility fire-safety and smoking policies.

• Ensure smoking occurs only in the designated smoking area.

• Monitor the smoking area for fire hazards.

• Ensure smoking materials are completely extinguished and disposed of properly.

• Report damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, or potential fire hazards immediately.

• Follow emergency procedures during fire alarms, severe weather, medical emergencies, or other facility emergencies.

• Never permit smoking in prohibited areas.

• Must demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills.

• Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work assigned shifts.

• Must be able to remain alert and attentive while supervising residents.

• Must demonstrate good judgment and the ability to follow safety procedures.

• Must maintain resident confidentiality.

• Must successfully complete required facility orientation and training.

• Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods.

• Ability to walk to and from designated smoking areas.

• Ability to assist with basic resident mobility needs within the limits of the position and facility policy.

• Ability to respond promptly to safety concerns and emergencies.

• Ability to communicate effectively with residents, visitors, and staff.
