Position: Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Mechanic III (Law Enforcement Facilities)- 15422

Overview

Compensation Range: $23.52–$35.97 per hour Starting Salary Range: $23.52–$29.745 per hour

Perform highly skilled duties to install, maintain, and repair refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation systems. Work may be performed both in an office and inmate‑population settings. A valid Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification must be obtained during the probationary period.

Responsibilities
  • Install, troubleshoot, and repair all types of refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment, including central, wall, and split system units; exhaust fans and blowers; walk‑in and chest‑type freezers; ice machines; and water coolers.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and schedule repairs as assigned.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches on an as‑needed basis.
  • Maintain a supply of replacement parts and place requisitions for needed supplies.
  • Operate tools and equipment such as refrigeration gauges, volt/ohm meters, vacuum pumps, recovery systems, welding equipment, and other related tools.
  • Assign, supervise, and inspect the work of lower‑level workers when required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation operating principles; safety requirements; and electrical aspects of equipment.
  • Skill in applying supervisory techniques and working with tools.
  • Ability to diagnose HVAC equipment using laptop computers and hand‑held devices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in high places, and lift/carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work effectively in a subtropical climate, prioritize work, and read mechanical and electrical diagrams.
  • Ability to project a professional image at all times and work well with colleagues in an office or jail environment.
Working Conditions
  • Work at various buildings and facilities within a law‑enforcement agency, including inmate‑populated areas.
  • May work outdoors in a subtropical climate and in potential adverse weather conditions.
  • May engage in heavy physical exertion, lift and carry up to 100 pounds, and travel to various work sites using a Sheriff’s Office‑issued vehicle.
  • Work may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to respond promptly to emergencies or disasters as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment; OR
  • High school diploma or GED, successful completion of a refrigeration and air conditioning program from a vocational/technical school, and one year of relevant experience.

Job Requirements
  • Attendance at the specified Sheriff’s Office work location is required.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and a clean driving history may be required.
  • No visible tattoos on the face, head, and neck; covered tattoos permitted with white, black, or neutral covering.
  • No drug sale or use violations (within lifetime and past 36 or 12 months as specified).
  • No felony convictions or major misdemeanor convictions related to perjury, false statement, or domestic violence.
  • No dishonorable discharge from U.S. armed forces.
  • Successful completion of background investigation, polygraph, medical evaluation, and drug screening.
  • Live within specified counties and within 60 miles of the Falkenburg Road Jail at the time of appointment if required.
