Description Position Summary

The Shelter Entry Coordinator serves as a staff member at will of Domestic Violence Intervention Services (DVIS). The Shelter Entry Coordinator serves as the initial point of contact for new clients seeking refuge and support within the Emergency Shelter program. This position is responsible for warmly welcoming clients, facilitating the intake process, addressing immediate needs, providing essential program information, and seamlessly transitioning clients to their assigned case worker.

Additionally, the Shelter Entry Coordinator serves as a liaison between programs and departments to ensure holistic support for survivors. This role assists in addressing client needs while not engaged in intake duties, fostering a supportive and responsive environment within the shelter.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    Client Welcoming and Intake Process
  • Provide crisis intervention services for phone-in and walk-in survivors.
  • Greet new clients with empathy, respect, and sensitivity.
  • Provide comprehensive information about the Emergency Shelter program, including services offered, rules, and expectations.
  • Orient clients to the shelter environment, ensuring they feel safe and informed upon arrival.
  • Address any questions or concerns regarding the program to promote client understanding and comfort.
  • Perform intakes and needs assessments and make any necessary referrals to other community resources.
  • Document and maintain resident files pursuant to DVIS guidelines and professional standards.
  • Promote a positive environment within the shelter for both residents and employees.
  • Provide supportive services to survivors, including safety planning, introducing other DVIS services, and transporting callers in imminent danger to the Shelter.
  • Priority 3:
    Collaboration and Liaison
  • Serve as a liaison between the Emergency Shelter program and other service providers working with survivors.
  • Communicate effectively with external agencies to coordinate referrals and ensure seamless transitions for clients.
  • Participate in case conferences or meetings to facilitate holistic support for clients across programs.
  • Collaborate with other DVIS departments and federal, state, and local agencies in meeting the needs of survivors.
  • Priority 4:
    Client Support and Assistance
  • Provide coverage for Safe Housing on-call rotation.
  • Assist clients in obtaining needed services and completing necessary paperwork for safe housing.
  • Act as an advocate for survivors with external agencies.
  • Organize and conduct supportive activities for Shelter residents.
  • Serve as an educator for pertinent topics such as life skills, etc.

Responsibility for Confidentiality: The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of DVIS and its clients.

Contact with Others: This position will interact with staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.

Requirements

Job Requirements /Experience

Education: 4-year degree required in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Experience: Requires 1-year of supervised experience working with individuals and groups in a social service or mental health environment; experience working in a nonprofit is preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of or experience working with social justice issues, specifically intimate partner, and gender-based violence, post-traumatic stress, rape trauma, mental health, substance abuse, and racial, class, gender, and sexual orientation issues strongly preferred.

Spanish bilingual preferred.

Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite are necessary; database experience preferred.
