Job Description

The Driver’s License Examiners (DLE’s) serve as the first line of homeland security for the State of Oklahoma. Responsibilities include conducting driver’s license interviews, examinations (visual, written, road), inspections, and determining eligibility for driver’s licenses or state identification cards in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Position Responsibilities
  • Interview applicants to determine the type of license or identification required; review, inspect, and verify the legality of qualifying documents; confirm identity and eligibility for driver’s license or identification card.
  • Advise applicants on reasons their application cannot be accepted and procedures to resolve disqualifying issues, including expert testimony on medical disqualifications.
  • Evaluate medical, physical, or mental information provided by applicant based on state and federal standards; determine requirements for waivers or restrictions to driving privileges; advise on waiver application procedures or additional evaluation.
  • Conduct in-depth vehicle safety inspections of vehicles, buses, and commercial vehicles used in required tests; assess operators’ knowledge and ability to safely operate required systems and equipment.
  • Administer vision, written, pre‑trip, and skill tests as appropriate; evaluate applicant’s performance to determine knowledge and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and comply with state and federal laws; identify areas of improvement and advise the applicant.
  • Establish driver’s license records while maintaining confidentiality and security of information in compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Assist the Legal Division in gathering evidence to prepare for potential legal action on fraudulent applications.
  • Respond to inquiries from motor license agents in verifying applicant identity and provide information on laws and procedures to law enforcement agencies and the public; make recommendations on changes to driver’s license laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct other interviews and hearings, formal or informal, regarding driver’s license suspensions, revocations, restrictions, modifications, temporary licenses, and related issues; review accident reports; render final decisions on appropriate actions; issue orders and complete related forms and documents.
  • Level II & Lead – Proctor CDL exams (must be CCKE certified).
  • Level II & Lead – Provide training to lower‑level staff at assigned or nearby locations.
  • Lead – Review timesheets each week for assigned team; identify issues, notify employees for corrections, and approve timesheets when accurately submitted by the weekly deadline.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws regarding driving privileges, physical requirements, exemptions, and issuance of driver’s licenses; knowledge of various types of commercial vehicles, related safety and equipment, licensing requirements, and interview principles and practices.
  • Ability to conduct interviews; inspect and evaluate motor vehicles and related equipment; operate all types of motor vehicles; administer written and performance tests; determine authenticity of identity documents; communicate effectively; operate computers; tap type.
  • Level II & Lead – Ability to oversee work of and provide guidance to lower‑level employees; perform highly complex and independent work for all classes of motor vehicles and licensing.
  • Lead – Knowledge and understanding of time and leave management.
