We’re seeking an Engineer I to join our Transportation & Engineering team, supporting private development review and public infrastructure design. This entry‑level position offers strong mentorship, hands‑on experience, and a clear path for advancement within the engineering series.

Design & Technical Support- Reviews and prepares engineering and environmental plans, reports, or contracts including right‑of‑way, illumination, signalization, signing, environmental impact statements, utility permits, and franchises for conformance with City and professional standards.
- Responds to citizen inquiries regarding transportation and roadway issues such as speeding, safety, signs, traffic volumes, signals, illumination, roadway geometry, crosswalks, bike lanes, parking and use of right‑of‑way.
- Responds to public inquiries concerning locations of existing public utilities, LID assessments, construction of public utilities and traffic volume or related questions.
- Conducts inspections on a variety of public works and utility projects, including all aspects of streets, sidewalks, sewers and water main installations, checking for quality of work during and upon completion of construction. May have charge of the inspection of a specific construction project; acts as the Project Engineer on inspections; may perform inspections on specialized or more complex projects; instructs subordinate personnel in inspection methods and procedures.
Review
- Reviews development applications or proposals for compliance with applicable Design Standards, Manuals, and other rules and regulations.
- Reviews project for completeness and reasonableness, exercising judgement in recommending that proposals proceed, coordinating and monitoring various activities for individual projects.
- Reviews projects that include detailed calculations and computer models for roadway geometrics, hydrology and hydraulics, grading plans, utility plans, and Environmental Impact Statements or other documents. Proposes changes to plans and/or approves designs of roads, utilities and stormwater plans.
- Provides detailed and clear review comment documents for developers and/or city staff.
- Prepares drafts of engineering recommendations for City Council, Public Works Committee and Planning Commission.
- Coordinates with consultants using standard format; reviews design reports on projects; reviews project estimates and final records.
- Participates in team meetings, project planning, and design reviews.
- Receives active mentorship from higher‑level engineers to develop technical proficiency.
- Contributes to process improvements and standard design/policy updates.
- As skills develop, has the opportunity to present project related materials to City Council or sub‑committees.
- May supervise lower‑level engineers and technician personnel in reviewing plans, specifications, and preliminary and construction layout.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Completion of accredited college coursework resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Preferred QualificationsPossession of an Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
