The Opportunity

This recruitment is open only to current City of Tumwater Public Works employees who meet the eligibility requirements for an internal crew transfer.

The City of Tumwater is committed to supporting employee development and providing opportunities for career growth within Public Works. When vacancies occur, current employees may request consideration for transfer to another maintenance crew based on operational needs, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.

This posting provides eligible employees the opportunity to express interest in transferring to the identified crew. Employees selected for transfer will continue to perform the duties of the Maintenance Technician classification while expanding their knowledge, skills, and experience within a new operational area.

Transfer opportunities may become available in any of the Public Works maintenance crews, including Streets, Water Distribution, Sanitary Sewer, Stormwater, Water Quality, Traffic Signals & Streetlights, or other operational areas as identified. Employees are encouraged to review the position information carefully before applying.

The successful candidate will perform the duties of the Maintenance Technician classification within the Sanitary Sewer Crew and Water Distribution Crew.Representative duties may include:

  • Perform maintenance, repair, inspection, and operational work specific to the assigned crew.
  • Operate equipment, tools, and specialized vehicles necessary to complete assigned work safely and efficiently.
  • Respond to routine service requests, emergency call-outs, and operational needs.
  • Apply established procedures, safety practices, and City standards while performing field assignments.
  • Work collaboratively with crew members to maintain and improve City infrastructure.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the Maintenance Technician classification.

Transfer Process
  • This posting is intended to identify qualified internal employees interested in transferring to the designated crew.
  • Employees should review the classification before submitting an application for review of specific certifications or licenses that may be required.
  • Employees must meet the minimum qualifications established for the classification and satisfy any crew-specific requirements or be able to obtain within a mutually defined period all required licenses or certifications.
  • Selection will be based on operational needs, qualifications, relevant experience, demonstrated skills and the employee's ability to successfully perform the work of the receiving crew.

Applicants should demonstrate the qualifications, experience, and readiness to successfully transition into the receiving crew. Consideration may include:

  • Current performance in the Maintenance Technician classification.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely perform the work of the receiving crew.
  • Relevant experience, certifications, licenses, or specialized training applicable to the receiving crew.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and adapt to different operational assignments.
  • Communication, teamwork, and professionalism.
  • Safe work practices, reliability, and attendance.
  • Overall operational needs of the department.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is performed in a variety of field, operational, or service environments, depending on assignment. Duties may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, traffic, equipment, uneven terrain, and other operational hazards. Work may require prolonged standing or walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and heavy lifting, as well as the operation of tools, equipment, or vehicles. Some assignments may involve working in confined or restricted spaces.
