Position: Milam Elementary - Special Education Assistant Teacher (2026 - 2027 School Year)

Assistant Teacher/Sp Ed

FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma; a passing score on the assistant teacher test
2. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Reports To:

Special Education Classroom Teachers

Job Goal:
Serve as assistant instructor to promote pupil learning. Reinforce skills and lessons taught by the instructor and supplement basal instruction to stimulate achievement.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provides individualized (one-to-one) instruction to special education students as directed.
  • Listens to special education children read and reads to special education in small groups.
  • Reinforces instructions of special education teacher with coordinated activities as assigned.
  • Helps all special education students stay on task during classroom activities (i.e. moving about classroom as assigned to assist special education students to understand and participate in instructional activities).
  • Assists special education teachers in exposing special education students to library books and other supplemental resources as assigned.
  • Supervises independent study of special education students.
  • Makes resource material for independent study for special education students.
  • Contributes to a positive learning environment for special education students.
  • Observes, tracks, and manages student behavior.
  • May assist students in using technology devices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with Universal Health Precautions.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.

Terms of Employment:
Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluated of Support Services Personnel.
