Job Summary
The Instrument Repair Technician at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for supporting the effective and consistent function of all instruments used by providing new or like new instruments and routine service and serving as a knowledge resource on use and needs. This position engages strong organizational and communication skills to support other departments’ use of surgical instruments and software; along with maintaining clear and comprehensive maintenance documentation.
The Instrument Repair Technician supports NMHS’ ability to provide high‑quality care by ensuring all surgical equipment/containers are available, ready to use and maintained quickly and accurately to ensure ongoing functionality and care.
- Clean, refurbish, sharpen, and repair surgical instruments/containers efficiently.
- Restore the functionality and surface finish of an instrument.
- Provide a high‑level service that brings instruments back to “like new” condition.
- Conduct final inspection of instruments/containers.
- Provide information regarding proper instrumentation maintenance and useful life.
- Communicate with various surgical instrument vendors.
- Order repair parts as needed.
- Assist in the database development and maintenance of instrumentation based on patient usage.
- Use software programming for laser etching.
- Participate in continuing education/training sessions annually.
- Adhere to NMHS/NMMC policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Comply with applicable local, state, and federal policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, statutes, and laws.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
- CRCST – Certified and Registered Central Service Technician. Required upon hire.
- +5 years of experience in sterile instrument repair in addition to the experience requirement. Required upon hire.
- 4–6 years of experience; 5 years minimum in inspecting and repairing surgical instruments under magnification. Required.
- Complete an extensive instrument repair training program.
- Excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Knowledge of the working applications and manufacturer’s recommendations for all surgical instrumentation.
- Working knowledge of computer software programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word).
- Basic understanding of simple math (ratios, percentages, graphs).
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to decide on useful functions of surgical instruments.
- Ability to problem‑solve.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
