Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY The Nursing Assistant at North Mississippi Health Services Systems is responsible for providing routine patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, coordinating patient care activities, and maintaining inventory control in an assigned unit. The role requires effective communication, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to prioritize patient care while maintaining a positive and caring attitude towards patients, staff, and visitors.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Patient Care:
Perform routine patient care under RN supervision. - Assist with patient’s plan of care by supporting activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, grooming, mobility, and comfort.
- Coordinate daily patient care activities on the nursing unit.
- Assist nursing staff with admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Perform duties within and in support of the assigned unit as delegated.
- Respond to patient call lights and report to appropriate personnel when necessary.
- Assist patients with nutritional needs, including feeding assistance and providing fluids and supplements.
- Inventory Control: Order, stock, and replenish unit supplies and equipment cost‑efficiently; participate in budget preparation and maintain unit within budget constraints.
- Communication: Facilitate unit communication via telephones, intercom, call lights, computers, and relay information as appropriate; communicate patient information, concerns, or issues to interdisciplinary team members; facilitate and direct communication among visitors, employees, and physicians.
- Customer Service: Welcome visitors, answer questions, give directions, and refer inquiries; answer telephone calls and direct them to the appropriate department or staff member; maintain a polite and friendly demeanor; ensure a safe and clean environment for patients and the health care team.
- Documentation: Document care provided using worksheets and/or the electronic medical record.
- Regulation: Adhere to professional standards, behavioral standards, and hospital policies; comply with applicable Local/State/Federal policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, and statutes; maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Education High School Diploma or GED Equivalent or higher (required).
Licenses and Certifications Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must meet and maintain education requirements upon hire and annually.
- Basic knowledge of computers preferred.
- Must be able to read, write, and use equipment on the nursing unit.
- Must recognize changes and abnormalities in patient condition and report to appropriate staff.
- Must prioritize patient care, carry out assigned duties, and document in worksheets and the electronic medical record.
- Assume additional duties as delegated or needed.
- Frequent interactions with patients, family members, nurses, physicians, visitors, and other staff.
- Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Must reflect a positive, caring attitude toward patients, staff, and the public.
- Must have excellent customer service skills, both in person and by phone.
Physical Demands Standing, walking, and sitting regularly; lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs frequently; pushing/pulling frequently; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, grasping, speaking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination.
