Job Summary
The Police Lieutenant assists in managing operations for the University Police Department. The position is responsible for supervising law enforcement personnel, developing policies and training programs, enforcing university and state laws, managing special events, and serving as a liaison with internal partners and external agencies.
Job Description- Implements the unit personnel resource allocation plan, including training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues.
- Serves as a unit representative and point of contact with law enforcement agencies, institutional work units, news media, social services, and special interest groups.
- Develops and communicates directives to staff and monitors compliance with rules and regulations.
- Schedules logistics and resources to protect life and property, preserve peace and good order, and provide emergency aid to the institutional community.
- Organizes and conducts crime prevention training programs to promote public awareness of crime risk and prevention methods.
- Prepares and presents evidence in civil and criminal court and university proceedings.
- Reviews and approves officer reports on incidents and criminal investigations.
• Supervising shift operations, reviewing and approving reports, investigations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies, and maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability.
• Responding to critical incidents, providing guidance during complex situations, and assuming command in the absence of higher‑ranking personnel.
• Developing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and training programs; keeping personnel current on applicable laws such as state statutes and campus regulations.
• Assisting in accreditation efforts and supporting compliance with reporting standards such as NIBRS and the Clery Act.
• Evaluating employee performance and providing recommendations related to promotions, discipline, transfers, leave, and professional development.
• Conducting security assessments of university facilities, supervising support staff, and managing evidence and property control processes.
• Collaborating with campus partners and external law‑enforcement agencies; representing the department at meetings and events; and supporting community engagement initiatives that promote safety and trust.
Minimum Requirements (Internal Candidates)- Must have been promoted to the rank of Sergeant from within the University of Mississippi Police Department with at least one year of service at that rank.
- Alternatively, if hired as a Sergeant, must have four continuous years of service with the department to be eligible for promotion.
- Verifiable supervisory experience at the Lieutenant level or above for a minimum of two (2) years.
- Any appointed person not certified by MSBELOST must become certified within one year of the appointment date, or as outlined in state law.

Education QualificationsHigh School diploma (required).
ExperienceRelevant experience: 5 years, including 3 years of supervisory experience (required).
Compensation$33.02 - $49.52 hourly.
