POSITION:
PART-TIME LECTURER IN HORTICULTURE: The Agriculture Program is seeking dedicated and motivated individuals to fill our need for instructors to serve our Horticulture concentration. Successful candidates will teach courses using our on-campus sustainable garden as a field laboratory and requiring the integration of classroom instruction with field trips and hands-on farm training/workshops to help deepen theoretical and practical understanding of horticulture practices.
Projected course assignments will focus on integrated pest management, weed biology, tree and fruit crop production and management, and principles and practices of horticulture. There may be additional compensated opportunities for specialized course development, for establishing an active student-focused experiential learning program, for student mentoring, and for advising a highly diverse student population, including those working to earn their Pest Control Advisor (PCA) and/or Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) licenses.
Appointments are based on available teaching need and may vary by semester. Successful candidates with interest in exploring competitive grant opportunities to fund summer activities and interdisciplinary projects on the university campus 2-acre Sustainable Garden and fruit orchard will be supported, as will those in a position to provide technical support to local farmers and ranchers.
This position is contingent upon the availability of authorized funding.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. or equivalent degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agronomy, Pomology or closely related field. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, typically supported by positive student evaluations of teaching. Applicants should provide evidence of experience or interest in serving a highly diverse student population.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference for practitioner candidates who provide evidence of effective teaching at the community college or university level and demonstrate proficiency in online instruction. Relevant agricultural extension experience will strengthen an applicant’s candidacy, as will a strong background interest and work experience in production and management of crops commonly grown in California. Familiarity with controlled environment agriculture platforms and previous experience working across disciplines to develop student experiential learning programs in high school or community college contexts is highly desired.

COMPENSATION:
Salary is based on qualifications and experience. As a member of the 23-campus CSU System, we offer an extremely competitive benefits package.
Newly hired lecturers with terminal degrees are placed in Range 3 of the salary schedule and others are normally placed in Range
2. Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules are prorated based on the number of units assigned and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
